A year ago Donovan McNabb was the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles as they were en route to the playoffs. Today, he's been benched by the Redskins in favor of Rex Grossman. Just let that sink in for a minute.
Is this most epic fall from grace we've seen in a long time? This is not to say Donovan McNabb can't resurrect his career ala Kurt Warner, but right now this has to be low point of his career. I actually might have felt bad for Donny had he not said this earlier in this season.. You still think the Eagles made a mistake trading you McNabb? I suspect you do, although not for the same reasons.
Every week, Chris Cooley's offseason tweet that the Eagles trade of McNabb to the Skins was "one of the top 10 biggest bonehead trades in the history of the NFL" is looking more and more true.
↵McNabb has been pretty terrible this season throwing more INTs than TDs and compiling his worst QB rating since his rookie year. Some have tried to explain that away by pointing out his lack of weapons, but let's not forget some of the guys he was throwing to for a big chunk of his career in Philadelphia... and he was never this bad. There's been a lot of rumblings about his fitness, work ethic, and grasp of the offense.
↵McNabb isn't going to be happy about the benching. As of two days ago he had not been told he wouldn't start and said reporters that it would be unprofessional to have not told him by then if indeed he was going to be benched. The decision to bench McNabb also has reportedly got the Redskins locker room upset.
↵Bottom line is that while McNabb may have struggled, this is still Rex Grossman he's being benched here for. A guy with virtually no track record of success. Quite the opposite in fact, he's got a resume full of failure. I think a commenter on Hogs Haven put it best.
↵↵↵I wouldn’t let Grossman start my F’ing car.
