Cowboys vs. Eagles 2012: Eagles doomed by 'bonehead mistakes'

With their 38-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles fell to 3-6 on the season and into the cellar of the NFC East. While the loss was frustrating, the way the Eagles lost was especially frustrating for Eagles fans.

Despite losing Michael Vick to an injury and their share of miscues, the Eagles led, 17-10, late in the third quarter and appeared to have momentum on their side. Then, as they have done before, the Eagles unraveled and allowed three touchdowns in less than three minutes of game time.

As Jason Brewer of SB Nation's Eagles site Bleeding Green Nation wrote, the mistakes were typical of the Eagles season and could ultimately cost head coach Andy Reid his job.

And that's really been very typical of the Eagles season so far. How many games have been completely upended by bonehead mistakes, big turnovers or generally just inexplicable play? Too many is the answer and ultimately those disasters will likely lead to the end of the Andy Reid era here in Philadelphia. They even missed an extra point in this game. It really has become a farce.

While Sunday's loss may have been a new low for the Eagles, it may not get better anytime soon. Vick could be out for a while with what was called a "significant" concussion. With a number of strong teams in the NFC, the Eagles may need to finish the season 6-1 -- or even 7-0 -- to have a shot at the playoffs.
