The Eagles announced today that they’ve decided to place the franchise tag on free agent WR to be DeSean Jackson. Eagles GM Howie Roseman says that he believe that this is the first step toward getting Jackson signed to a new long term deal.
“We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that,” said Roseman. “DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It’s our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him.”
If he were to sign the tag and play this year under, Jackson would earn at least $9.4 million. The franchise tag could certainly push each side toward getting a new long term deal done. Jackson would certainly prefer more long term security and the Eagles would be happy to get that $9 mil cap hit lower.
