Mel Kiper's 2012 NFL Mock Draft Round 2: Eagles Select Lavonte David And Kirk Cousins

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr released his second round mock draft ahead of tonight’s broadcast of the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Eagles fans will probably like his first pick, but probably not the second.

Here’s what Kiper predicts.

#46 – Lavonte David, LB, Nebraska – A tackling machine, he’s a perfect weakside LB. Covers the field

#51 – Kirk Cousins, QB, Michigan State – I know Philly likes him and might take the leap here. Good guy to develop.

Lavonte David is a really good player and would fit the Eagles perfectly. He could slide into the SAM linebacker spot and potentially start from day one. Outside linebacker is arguably the Eagles biggest need at this point, so David would fill that hole well.

As for the other pick, I’ve said consistently through this process that I have no interest in drafting a QB. Not only do I not think there’s not a pressing need, but it’s generally been pointless to draft a QB in the second round. This idea of just getting a guy and developing him really is a misnomer. Only one QB taken in the 2nd round in the last 6 years is currently a starter and only one has made a Pro Bowl. They’re the same guy. Andy Dalton… and even though his Pro Bowl appearance was mostly just by default, it does go to show that 2nd round QBs don’t usually yield much value.
