NHL Scores: Danny Briere Nets Game Winner As Flyers Down Islanders 3-2

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) – Danny Briere scored with under six minutes to play to help the Philadelphia Flyers take a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

Andreas Nodl and Matt Carle each had a goal while Andrej Meszaros added two assists for the Flyers, who have won two straight after dropping their previous three. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 shots in the win.

Jon Sim and Frans Nielsen each lit the lamp for the Islanders, who have dropped three straight after snapping a franchise-record 14-game losing streak. Dwayne Roloson made 24 stops in the loss.

“Each individual day in and day out has to do their best,” said Roloson. “Everyone on this team has to look at themselves and decided as a team that we can make this work or it’s never going to happen.”

Philadelphia blew a 1-0 lead early in the third when the Isles scored two goals just 36 seconds apart, but tied the game on the power play when Nodl cashed in on the power play by slamming home a Meszaros shot that saved initially by Roloson.

The Flyers took a 3-2 lead with 5:44 to play. Scott Hartnell chipped the puck into the neutral zone where Ville Leino caught up to it at the left boards. Leino then threw it out front, and Briere slipped a low shot past the right pad of Roloson for his 14th goal of the season.

Philadelphia had to kill off an Isles power play after Leino was called for tripping, but survived, and New York pulled Roloson for the extra attacker to no avail in the final minute.

“When they scored the second goal, coach called a timeout and kinda yelled at us,” said Nodl. “It was for good reason and it sparked us. We responded and were able to rally for the win.”

Carle gave the Flyers an early lead at 13:42 of the first. He threw the puck out in front from behind the net at the left corner, and it hit an Islander and went in.

Neither goaltender allowed a puck past them in the second, as Bobrovsky stopped 15 shots while Roloson made nine saves.

The Isles tied the game at the 5:12 mark of the third when Rob Schremp sent a pass from the right boards to the slot where a wide open P.A. Parenteau one- timed the puck and it hit off of Sim.

Just 36 seconds later, New York went ahead as Nielsen blasted a shot from the right circle on the fly that trickled past Bobrovsky for a 2-1 advantage.
