NHL Power Rankings Week 22: The Calm Before the Storm

This week, there was very little movement in the power rankings. Washington moves up a spot in the East while San Jose falls two in the West.

Eastern Conference

This Week Last Week Rationale
Rating
Bruins_medium 1 1 The Bruins got three points in three games, and remain in third place in the East with a league-best 1.43 five-on-five ratio.
1.762
Flyers_medium 2 2 Philadelphia blew a 3-0 third period lead, but still got 5 out of 6 possible points for the week. And remain in first place.
1.569
Penguins_medium 3 3 The Penguins are clinging to third place here, largely due to back-to-back 5-1 wins against Edmonton and Ottawa.
1.353
Capitals_medium 4
5
Washington earned all 8 possible points last week and even sat atop the East for about 20 minutes on Tuesday.
1.341
Canadiens_medium 5
4
The Canadiens only got 2 points out of 6 last week, but they had gotten 12 out of 14 prior to that.
1.238
Sabres_medium 6
6
Buffalo went 1-2-1 last week, losing one-goal games to Toronto and Carolina. Not who they want to lose to.
1.116
Lightning_medium 7
7
The Lightning are sitting in 5th place in the East, have gotten 6 out of 8 points, but still have a negative goal differential.
1.099
Rangers_medium 8
8
New York has a little breathing room now, up 4 points on 9th place Carolina who has a game in hand.
1.065
Hurricanes_medium 9
9
The Hurricanes helped their case last week by beating Buffalo, but are still two points back.
0.940
Thrashers_medium 10
11
Atlanta scored 5 goals in just over 20 minutes against the Flyers on their way to getting 5 out of 8 possible points.
0.861
Maple_leafs_medium 11
10
The Maple Leafs are 6 points back with 12 games to play, so their slim playoff hopes are probably done.
0.830
Panthers_medium 12
12
Florida lost to Ottawa, but beat the Lightning in OT. Don't know if that evens out, really.
0.784
Devils_medium 13
13
The Devils are 6 points out with a game in hand, but they have to jump over two teams to get there.
0.767
Islanders_medium 14 14 New York beat the Bruins last week. Good for them.
0.699
Senators_medium 15 15 The Senators went on the road and beat both Florida teams. Also, good for them.
0.572

Western Conference

This Week Last Week Rationale
Rating
Canucks_medium 1 1 The Canucks are probably going to win the President's Trophy. In fact, they are one point away from a Northwest Division crown.
1.694
Red_wings_medium 2 2 Detroit got 4 of 6 points last week, and now sit 6 points up in the Central.
1.371
Blackhawks_medium 3
3
The Blackhawks are in 6th place, 4 points up on 9th. Getting 4 of six points is good, but going 1-0-2 is only decent.
1.366
Coyotes_medium 4
5
Phoenix got all 6 points last week, but are only 5 points up on a playoff spot with one less game to play.
1.312
Kings_medium 5
6
The Kings got all 8 points last week, and only kept pace with the Coyotes.
1.248
Sharks_medium 6
4
San Jose only lost once in regulation last week and they are still atop the Pacific, but they fall here after only getting 4 of 8 points.
1.204
Predators_medium 7
9
The Predators are on the outside looking in, but with two games in hand on the Flames, they really aren't.
1.184
Stars_medium 8
9
Dallas is clinging to 7th place, and only getting 3 of 8 points isn't going the help.
1.122
Flames_medium 9
7
The Flames are technically in the playoffs, but with two additional games played on 9th place, they can't lose three in a row again.
1.085
Wild_medium 10
10
Minnesota got shutout twice last week and didn't register a single point. Still only 3 points behind Nashville, though.
0.986
Blue_jackets_medium 11
11
The Blue Jackets won their only road game last week, but that's all they won.
0.984
Ducks_medium 12
12
Anaheim may not look good here - or many other places - but they are only 2 points out with three games in hand.
0.957
Blues_medium 13
13
The Blues scored three goals in three straight games, only losing to Detroit.
0.874
Avalanche_medium 14
14
Colorado has now earned three points out of a possible twenty. Bad.
0.754
Oilers_medium 15 15 The Oilers only scored twice in their 3 games last week, getting blown out by Washington and Pittsburgh, but taking Detroit to OT.
