Flyers Will Not Offer Steven Stamkos A Contract

The dream is over almost as soon as it began. After a few days of rampant speculation that the Flyers might make a run at restricted free agent Steven Stamkos, the word has been put out to all the beat writers that an offer will not be made.

So no going straight back to cap hell, no giving up their next four years worth of first round picks, but also no 21 year old 50+ goal scorers either. The Flyers instead turn their attention to signing their own RFAs Jakub Vorcek and Wayne Simmonds, possibly working out a new deal to bring Ville Leino back and heading into the free agent market with a few bucks to spend.

The Flyers might not be major players for Stamkos or Brad Richards, but they’ve got enough cap space to fill some holes with veteran help. Broad Street Hockey says they expect the team to bring in a free agent defenseman as early as tomorrow.

Some other possible names are Jamie Langenbrunner and Erik Cole, who played with Peter Laviolette in Carolina.
