Phillies spring training rolled on today with Roy Oswalt making his first start of year. He pitched two innings, giving up a run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. It was overall a pretty poor day for the Phils pitching staff as the Orioles pounded out 16 hits en route to a 6-5 victory in Grapefruit League action.
Brad Lidge gave up 3 hits and a run in one inning of work, Vance Worley gave up 4 hits and and a run over two innings…. In fact the only two of the Phillies seven pitchers today managed to not give up a run, David Herndon and Brian Gordon. By the middle of the 8th inning the O’s had built a 6-1 lead with the Phillies lone run coming off a Ryan Howard RBI double off the wall.
The Phils would mount a rally in the ninth with home runs from Michael Martinez and John Mayberry Jr. to cut the deficit to one run, but that’s how it would end.
Next up, the Phillies play the Boston Rd Sox in Ft Myers tomorrow afternoon. Cole Hamels makes his second start of the spring.
