Cole Hamels Complete Game Gem Lifts Phillies Over Nationals 4-1

Cole Hamels allowed five hits and just one run in his eighth career complete game as the Phillies beat the Nationals 4-1 at Citizens Bank Park. It was Hamels’ first complete game since last August when he threw one against the Mets.

Hamels also did some good work with the bat with two hits, including his first career triple.

Raul Ibanez seemed to break out of his awful 0 for 35 slump with a couple of doubles and an RBI. Jimmy Rollins was moved back into the leadoff spot and responded with a 2-4 night. He tripled, singled, stole a base, knocked a run in and scored another.

Jayson Werth struggled in his first return to Citizens Bank Park since signing a 7-year $126 million deal with the Nationals. He did draw a walk, but went 0-3 with a K. He drew mostly boos while at the plate, but did get some cheers as he tipped his cap to crowd.

The lone National run came on a Michael Morse homer in the seventh.

Vance Worley gets the ball tomorrow night against Jason Marquis. Worley is coming off a solid first outing of the year against the Mets throwing six innings of two hit shit out ball. He struck out five, but also surrendered four walks. Marquis is off to a solid start this year with a 3-0 record and a 2.62 ERA. However, he has given up a lot of hits this year and never really looked terribly impressive.
