Cliff Lee once went a stretch of three games this season in late April/early May where he got literally zero run support. Today, he got it in spades as the Phillies pounded the Cubs bullpen for five runs en route to a 7-1 win. Lee cruised through eight innings of work giving up just one run on four hits and striking out seven.
The Phillies offense was keyed by Chase Utley, who knocked in four runs with a double and his second home run of the year. Shane Victorino had three hits and scored three runs as the Phillies offense has tallied seven runs for the third time this week.
Unlike last night, there were no late inning bullpen collapses to make the game closer than it should have been. Lee pitched 8 innings and Antonio Bastardo set the Cubs down in order in the ninth.
The Phils will wrap up this game set with the Cubs tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 as Roy Oswalt faces Doug Davis.
