Phillies Place Ryan Madson On DL, Call Up Andrew Carpenter

The original reports on Ryan Madson's injured hand was that MRIs and X-rays revealed nothing, but that he would be re-evaluated on Tuesday. Well, Tuesday is here and he's been placed on the 15 day DL. Madson has been experiencing pain in his hand when he throws certain pitches after he was hit by a ball against the Texas Rangers back in late May.

While nothing is broken, a hand specialist did diagnose him with some inflammation of the small muscles in the hand. The treatment is simply some rest and medication.

He was scheduled to throw today to see if he's made any progress and I think we can assume by the move that the throwing session didn't go as they hoped. The move was made retroactive, so he will be available to come off the DL on July 4th.

To take Madson's place on the roster, the Phillies called up Andrew Carpenter. In the meantime, it's likely that Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo will continue being the primary options at the end of games.
