Cliff Lee Throws Third Straight Complete Game Shutout As Phillies Beat Red Sox 5-0

There was history made down at Citizens Bank Park tonight as Cliff Lee spun his third straight complete game shutout, become the first Phillie to do that since hall of famer Robin Roberts in 1950. In doing so, he also extended his scoreless innings streak to 32. In fact, he's allowed just one earned run over his last 42 innings.

Perhaps the most impressive part of this feat was that he did this against the Boston Red Sox, who currently have the highest scoring offense in the majors. Tonight, Lee allowed just two hits while striking out five. Only one baserunner even reached second base. Boston's previous lowest hit total this year was four.

Lee's counterpart, Josh Beckett, entered the evening with the lowest ERA in the AL at 1.86. Suffice to say, that's going to rise a bit after this evening. Both Domonic Brown and Shane Victorino hit 2-run homers while Lee himself knocked in a run with a sac fly.

Tonight marks the Phillies 50th win, making them the first team to fifty this year. Cliff Lee improves to 5-0 in June with an ERA of 0.21. Tonight was Lee's fourth shutout of the season and as Jayson Stark points out, that's more than 7 teams have thrown this year.

Vance Worley will take the hill tomorrow night against John Lackey.
