Two-run doubles from Chase Utley and Michael Martinez in the 8th and 9th respectively highlighted a late inning Phillies comeback as they beat the Chicago Cubs in the second of their three game series at Wrigley Field.
The home team got off to a quick lead as Starlin Castro belted a 2-run homer off Cliff Lee in the first inning. Lee and the Phils bullpen would blank the Cubs from that point on, but until the 8th the offense was unable to do anything about it. Cubs starter Matt Garza went seven strong innings giving up just four hits, the last of which was a leadoff single to Jimmy Rollins in the bottom of the 8th. That would end Garza’s night as Cubs skipper Mike Quade opted to being on Sean Marshall. That would prove to be a mistake.
Marshall served up a single to Michael Martinez and a double to Chase Utey, blowing the lead and tying the game at two. After getting out of the inning, Marshall stayed in to pitch the ninth and after getting the first two batters out, gave up back to back singles to Rollins and Francisco before Michael Martinez smacked a two run double to give the Phils the lead.
Antonio Bastardo came on and struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn his seventh save of the year.
