The MLB announced on Friday morning the nominations for this year's GIBBY awards and four members of the Philadelphia Phillies have been nominated. Cole Hamels, Carlos Ruiz, Kevin Frandsen and Jim Thome are all finalists for four different awards.
Hamels has been nominated for the Starting Pitcher of the Year award. In 31 starts this season, he recorded a 17-6 record with a 3.05 ERA, in addition to a career-high 216 strikeouts.
While Ruiz spent the year catching for Hamels, he is being honored for his bat instead of his glove as he earned a nomination for the Breakout Hitter of the Year award. He hit .325 this past season with 32 doubles, 16 home runs, 68 RBI and a .935 OPS.
Thome is also being honored for his bat as he earned a nomination for Walk-Off of the Year. While Thome didn't finish the season with the Phillies, he did hit his record-setting 13th walk-off home run of his career on June 23 while he was still with the team.
Frandsen earned a nomination for Play of the Year for a play he made on Aug. 21 against the Cincinnati Reds.
Gibby awards are decided by a vote of media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American Baseball Research.
