Freddy Galvis could be next year's third baseman

Freddy Galvis has played short stop and second base, but the Phillies might move him over to third in 2013.

Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

The Phillies are trying to acquire a third baseman via trade or free agency, but if neither works out, then Freddy Galvis will compete for the starting job.

Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer breaks down Philadelphia's options. Expensive, injury-prone free agents and potentially reluctant trading partners mean that Galvis and Jeff Frandsen could platoon for the job. Potential free agents to sign include Kevin Youkilis, Placido Polanco, Jeff Keppinger, and Marco Scutaro.

Here's Gelb's take on Galvis:

A fractured back and subsequent performance-enhancing drug suspension cost Galvis most of 2012; his last appearance was June 6. Fully healthy, he has swung a hot bat in Venezuela. He is batting .321 with a .867 OPS in 22 games. Eight of his 27 hits are for extra bases.
