The San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 on Saturday night, behind a strong pitching performance from Edinson Volquez and a timely pinch hit from Jesus Guzman. Guzman popped out in right field foul territory, but it was deep enough for Cameron Maybin to score from third. Volquez gave up six hits but only one run through six innings.
Roy Halladay gave up two runs and seven hits over seven innings of work. He is now winless in his five previous starts, despite striking out 10 on Saturday. The offensive support simply wasn't there for Halladay, as aside from one run in the third the Phillies had trouble turning hits into runs. They left twelve men on base, and were 1-10 with runners in scoring position.
The Phillies have now split the first two games of their three game series versus the Padres. The deciding game will be played Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch at 1:35pm EST.
