The Philadelphia Phillies shelled Stephen Strasburg (11-5) on Tuesday, ending his night after four innings in an 8-0 win in the series opener against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park. Strasburg gave up eight hits and a walk for six earned runs while striking out three before leaving the mound. Cliff Lee (2-6), meanwhile, got his second win of the season with a solid start giving up zero runs off five hits and a walk, while striking out seven in seven innings.
Kevin Frandsen hit his first home run of the season to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Philadelphia also scored a pair of runs on two separate cases of excellent base-running. Juan Pierre stole third in the third inning, then advanced to home on a throwing error to give Philadelphia a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, Jimmy Rollins hit an inside-the-park home run to also score Lee, putting the Phillies up 6-0.
Carlos Ruiz and Laynce Nix batted in runs in the ninth inning off Henry Rodriguez to cap the Phillies' scoring at eight runs.
Game 2 of the series is set for 7:05 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Vance Worley (5-6 3.88 ERA) and the Nats' Edwin Jackson (6-6, 3.52) will be the starting pitchers.
