Trade Rumors 2012: Cliff Lee Placed On Waivers According To Report

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cliff Lee has been placed on waivers according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. Passan is expecting that Lee will clear waivers, giving the Phillies the chance to trade the left-hander.

Lee's huge contract is the big reason why Lee isn't expected to be claimed off of waivers outright, as he is owed almost $95 million until the end of the 2015 season. If some team were to claim Lee off of waivers, the Phillies can pull him off of the waiver wire to either keep him or spark a trade between the two teams.

Lee's name was thrown about in the previous few weeks before the July 31st trading deadline, but Matt Gelb of the Philly.com's report of Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. trade demands did not elicit any serious bids for Lee. In addition to not absorbing any of Lee's remaining $95 million left on his contract, Amaro Jr. wanted a couple of quality prospects in return for the former Cy Young winner. Unless something changed over the last few days, expect Lee to stay with the Phillies through the offseason.
