Roger Torres scored his first goal for Union literally seconds after his introduction to give the Union a 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls. The win puts the Union at 3-1 on the season and still undefeated at PPL Park.
The lone Union goal was really the result of an unthinkable mistake from the RBNY defense. In the 68th minute, play stopped as the both teams made substitutions. At the restart, the ball was played back to Red bull defender Tim Ream, who lazily sent a pass directly to Danny Mwanga who pounced on the ball, passed through to Torres, who slotted home coolly past Bouna Coundou.Torres had only come into the game seconds before.
Red Bull was not without its chances, as burgeoning US national team star Juan Agudelo has two shots deflect off the goal posts. All told, you would probably say that RBNY controlled the play for most of the game and looked like the better team up until the Union goal. As is always the case, it's not about how many opportunities you create, it's about what you do with them.
All three of the Union wins this season have come by the score of 1-0. They've conceded just one goal this season, giving them the lowest goals per game of any team in MLS. The Union remain clear atop the Eastern conference with nine points. New England Revolution sit in second on six points.
