The Union recorded their 6th shutout of the year and pulled into a first place tie in the East after drawing 0-0 with the Earthquakes in San Jose this evening. It was the 4th time in the past five matches that San Jose has been shutout.
The best chance of the match came in the 85th minute when Kyle Nakazawa’s free kick hit the right post. Danny Mwanga also had two dangerous shots saved. The Union were without forward Carlos Ruiz, who Peter Nowak gave the night off to rest after four Gold Cup matches and three straight MLS games.
The draw pulls the Union even with the New York Red Bulls, who were defeated by DC United earlier this evening, plus Philadelphia still has two games in hand. So despite their so-so form as of late, the Union still control things in the East. Next up are the New England Revolution next Sunday.
