In front of a national TV audience, the Philadelphia Union fell to D.C. United, 1-0, on Thursday night in one of the uglier performances of the season. Lionard Pajoy, a former Union forward, buried the game's only goal in the 67th minute to move United into the fourth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Neither club played particularly well, with the Union's best opportunity coming in the final minutes of stoppage time. United was unable to control a loose ball in front but Philly could not put a quality shot on net to even things up.
In the only score of the game, DC United's Chris Pontius broke down the right side and forced Philly goalie Zac MacMath to commit. He crossed it over to Pajoy and the Union defense could not close on him as the chip shot went into the back of the net.
Philadelphia next hosts Houston on Sunday at PPL Park.
