Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) – Raul Ibanez ignited a three-run 10th inning with an RBI double off Arthur Rhodes — ending the southpaw’s 33-appearance scoreless streak — as the Philadelphia Phillies took down the Cincinnati Reds, 9-6, in the middle installment of a three-game set at Great American Ball Park.

Brian Schneider and Wilson Valdez each hit three-run homers for the Phillies, who bounced back from a 7-3 loss in the series opener and have won six of eight overall. Valdez drove in a career-high four runs, while Schneider had three hits and scored twice for the victors.

Joe Blanton lasted 7 2/3 innings in the start, allowing three runs on eight hits. Brad Lidge (1-0) got the win despite giving up three runs in the ninth. J.C. Romero recorded his third save of the year.

Joey Votto hit a three-run homer in the ninth to tie the game for the Reds, who had won six of seven coming into Tuesday’s game. Ramon Hernandez knocked in two runs.

Mike Leake, the eighth overall pick of the 2009 draft, gave up a season- high six runs on seven hits in a six-inning start. He also fanned four batters and walked two. Rhodes (2-2) was charged with all three runs in the 10th to take the loss.

(Sports Network) – With their offense starting to heat up, the last thing the Philadelphia Phillies need right now is another injury. However, they might be without former All-Star Chase Utley this evening in the second portion of a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

The Phillies had plated 75 runs over their previous 11 games prior to last night’s 7-3 setback. More concerning was the exit of Utley, who injured his right thumb sliding into second base during the fourth inning and had to leave the game in the ninth frame.

The second baseman, who is hitting .395 (15-for-38) over his last 10 games with a homer and 11 RBI, will undergo an MRI on Tuesday and the Phils hope it isn’t serious.

“But for him to leave a game … that’s the last guy that’s going to take himself out of a game,” Shane Victorino told the Phillies’ website. “He’s obviously hurting. I hope he’s not seriously hurt.”

Raul Ibanez had a late two-run homer for Philadelphia and Kyle Kendrick yielded six runs — five earned — on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.

The Phillies had won five of six coming in, but fell 4 1/2 games back of the first-place Braves in the National League East. The Reds, meanwhile, were able to maintain their half-game edge over the second-place Cardinals in the NL Central thanks in part to Scott Rolen’s 300th career homer.

Rolen, who began his career with six-plus seasons in Philadelphia from 1996-2002, launched his team-leading 17th homer of the season to break a scoreless game in the fourth inning. That helped make a winner out of Johnny Cueto, who tossed eight innings and allowed just one run in the Reds’ sixth victory in their last seven games.

“Johnny threw great,” Rolen said. “He’s been consistent all year. Obviously he was lights-out early. He’s going out there deep into the game — [into the] sixth, seventh and eighth inning. Any time you do that, you’ve got a chance to win.”

Orlando Cabrera and Joey Votto both had three hits and an RBI, with Votto extending his string of reaching base safely to a career-best 36 straight games.

Rookie Mike Leake will make his 15th start of the season two days later than anticipated as the Reds try to limit his innings. He is 5-1 with a 2.92 earned run average and has totaled 89 1/3 innings so far. Reds general manager Walt Jocketty told his team’s website that they would like to limit Leake to 170 innings.

“That’s not etched in stone,” he told the site. “It depends on how many pitches he throws each time out, the kind of effort and how he feels.”

The eighth overall pick of the 2009 draft suffered his first career loss on June 16 versus the Dodgers, allowing five runs over six innings. Leake then limited the Athletics to just a run on five hits and four walks over six innings of a no-decision last Monday.

The right-hander is 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA in nine starts at home this year and faces the Phillies for the first time.

Joe Blanton looks to continue his turnaround this evening when he faces the Reds for the third time in his career.

Blanton has won back-to-back starts since an 0-3 stretch that saw him post a 10.18 ERA over four starts. However, the right-hander bested the Twins with six innings of three-run ball on June 18 and followed that up six days later with 7 2/3 frames in a victory against the Indians. Blanton allowed another three runs in the 12-3 triumph, striking out eight.

“I changed a couple things that helped me get the ball down in the zone and I think that’s made a big difference,” Blanton told the Phillies’ website. “Sinker’s a big pitch for me, and not being able to throw it down makes it flat and makes for a tough day when you go out there. Now I’m able to get it down, and everything has been working off of that.”

The 29-year-old is just 1-3 with a 9.27 ERA in four road starts this year and 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA versus the Reds.

The Phillies took five of seven from the Reds last season and have won nine of the last 13 meetings overall.

Making the loss even worse, Chase Utley injured his thumb sliding into second base and will require an MRI on Tuesday.

From CSNPhilly:

Utley’s attempt to get something going for the Phillies’ offense in the top of the fourth inning Monday night backfired – in more ways than one.

In addition to being called out diving into second base, Utley suffered a right thumb injury that did not become evident until he had to be pinch-hit for in the ninth inning of the Phils’ 7-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) – Former Phillie Scott Rolen paced the Reds’ offense with a two-run homer and three RBI, while Johnny Cueto tossed eight solid innings on the mound, as Cincinnati handled Philadelphia, 7-3, in the opener of a three-game set at Great American Ball Park.

Orlando Cabrera and Joey Votto each had three hits and an RBI for the Reds, who have won six of their last seven. Ramon Hernandez knocked in a run and scored once for the victors.

Cueto (8-2) allowed just one run on six hits to pick up his first career victory against the Phillies. He was 0-2 with a 15.26 earned run average in two previous starts versus Philadelphia.

Raul Ibanez belted a two-run homer and drove in three runs for the Phillies, who had won five of six coming in. Ryan Howard had two hits and scored a run in defeat.

Kyle Kendrick (4-3) gave up six runs — five earned — on eight hits in a 6 1/3-inning start to take the loss. Kendrick, who also struck out four and walked no batters, fell to 3-1 lifetime against the Reds.

The Phillies, who stranded a runner on second in the first and third frames, wasted a great scoring opportunity in the fourth. Chase Utley led off with a single to center, but was thrown out while trying to stretch it into a double. Howard doubled and Jayson Werth walked to put men on first and second. However, Ibanez grounded into a double play to end the threat.

Kendrick retired the first 10 batters he faced before giving up a one-out double to Cabrera in the home fourth. Cabrera, though, was caught trying to steal third. Votto followed with a two-bagger of his own. Rolen stepped to the plate and blasted a 2-0 cutter off the left-field foul pole for a 2-0 lead.

Cincinnati added two more runs in the sixth to make it 4-0. Cueto reached first on second baseman Utley’s fielding error, Brandon Phillips singled, and Cabrera singled to load the bases with nobody out. Votto then hit a run-scoring base hit in front of Rolen’s sacrifice fly. Jonny Gomes and Jay Bruce both fouled out to end the frame.

Cueto retired seven straight batters before Howard led off the seventh with a triple off the wall in center. Howard crossed the plate two batters later when Ibanez reached first on an infield single.

The Reds responded with two runs in the home seventh on Hernandez’s RBI double and Cabrera’s run-scoring single.

Pinch-hitter Chris Heisey hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 7-1.

Ibanez hit a two-run homer off Bill Bray in the ninth to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

The Phillies took five of seven from the Reds last season and have won nine of the last 13 meetings overall…It was Kendrick’s first loss since May 22 against the Red Sox…Rolen, who played the first six-plus years of his career with the Phillies, hit his 300th career homer…Votto has reached base safely in a career-high 36 straight games…Philadelphia was without third baseman Placido Polanco (left elbow).

(Sports Network) - As the weather is getting warmer, so are the Phillies' bats.

Given their past success against Reds starter Johnny Cueto, that isn't likely to change this evening when Philadelphia begins a three-game set versus Cincinnati at Great American Ball Park.

After averaging just 2.5 runs per game during an 8-17 stretch from May 18-June 15, the Phillies have plated 75 runs over their last 11 games, including 21 in their most recent set with the Blue Jays that saw Philadelphia take two of three.

The Phils capped the weekend series with an 11-2 triumph on Sunday as Jimmy Rollins and Ben Francisco both ended with three hits and two RBI. Poor defense by the Blue Jays also factored into the outcome, as six of Philadelphia's runs were unearned.

"We want to stay hot going into the All Star break," said first baseman Ryan Howard, who scored three runs on Sunday and has five homers and 12 RBI over his last 11 games.

Jamie Moyer reached a couple of milestones in winning Sunday's finale. He hurled seven innings of two-run ball and became the 40th pitcher in major league history to reach 4,000 innings pitched. However, he also allowed the 506th homer of his career, passing former Phillies great Robin Roberts for the most all-time.

Philadelphia, which has won five of its last six to get within 2 1/2 games of first place in the National League East, was without Placido Polanco for a second straight game after he aggravated a left elbow injury on Friday. He could also sit out tonight as well.

The Blue Jays series technically marked the opener of the Phillies' 10-game road trip, though the set was shifted from the Rogers Centre to Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park due to security concerns involving Toronto's hosting of the G20 Summit. The Phils were credited as the visiting team and batted first in the series.

The Phillies will try to keep their offense on track this evening against Cueto, who is 0-2 with a 15.26 earned run average in two career starts versus the club. Most of that damage came during a July 6 meeting in 2009, a contest won by Philadelphia, 22-1. Cueto lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing nine runs.

The 24-year-old right-hander has won seven of his last eight decisions this year however, and has allowed just one run over his last two starts after posting a 9.00 ERA in his first three outings of June. He gave up just a run in a tough-luck 1-0 loss to Seattle on June 18 before notching seven-plus shutout innings in besting Oakland on Wednesday. Cueto allowed seven hits while improving to 7-2 with a 3.97 ERA.

Kyle Kendrick opposes Cueto and he struggled his last time out. After going 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA in five previous outings, four of those starts, the right- hander yielded five runs -- four earned -- on six hits in four-plus innings versus the Indians on Wednesday. He did not factor into the decision of his team's 7-6 win and is 4-2 on the year with a 4.71 ERA.

"My command wasn't good," Kendrick told the Phillies' website. "I fell behind hitters. I left the ball up and got hit hard. I didn't do my job tonight."

Though the 25-year-old has allowed at least four runs in each of his three career starts versus the Reds and has never made it past the sixth inning, he is 3-0 with a 6.61 ERA against them.

The Reds hope for better results versus Kendrick tonight after having their five-game winning streak snapped with Sunday's 5-3 defeat to Cleveland.

Joey Votto had two hits, one a two-run homer, to extend his streak of reaching base to 35 straight games, while Bronson Arroyo allowed four runs over five innings.

"I felt pretty good today, actually, which is so ironic, " Arroyo said. "The last two times out I felt terrible and threw a lot of zeroes on the board and today I felt pretty good and you don't get the same results."

Despite the loss, the Reds remained a half-game up on the Cardinals for first place in the NL Central.

The Phillies took five of seven from the Reds last season and have won nine of the last 12 meetings overall.
