Cole Hamels was nearly unhittable, Jayson Werth had the game-winning hit, and Brad Lidge closed the door as the 2010 Phillies did their best 2008 Phillies impression in an extra-innings win over the Cardinals.

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Placido Polanco's leadoff homer in the 11th inning provided the game-winning run, and the Philadelphia Phillies avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 2-0 victory.

Polanco, a former Cardinal who finished with three hits on Thursday, crushed his sixth home run of the year and first since May 9 for the Phillies, who had lost six of seven to begin their second of half of the season. Ryan Howard also had three hits, while Jayson Werth added an RBI double in the win.

Cole Hamels was spectacular in the start, allowing just a hit and a walk in eight shutout innings. He faced 25 batters, one over the minimum, and has allowed one run in his last 22 2/3 innings over three starts. Chad Durbin (2- 1) earned the victory, while Brad Lidge recorded his eighth save.

Adam Wainwright extended his scoreless innings streak to 25 after giving up six hits while fanning six in six frames for the Cardinals, who had their eight-game win streak snapped. St. Louis advanced just one runner past first base for the duration of the game and had just three baserunners overall.

The Good Phight lays the blame for this loss squarely on the shoulders of one Charles Fuqua Manuel. With two out and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, the pitcher's spot was due up to bat. TGP takes it from there.

To that point, Blanton had worked six innings of one-run ball, and his pitch count was reasonable. But this was a game situation, a prime opportunity for a struggling offense against a starter who seemed on the ropes… and more to the point, Blanton’s 2010 body of work in the seventh inning of his starts had been something out of an Adam Eaton nightmare: hitters had gone 15 for 31 against him with 5 home runs and a triple-slash line of .484/.500/1.032.

You know the rest. Blanton strikes out, Matt Holliday homers off him the next inning … game over. Cholly dun messed up.

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) – Matt Holliday hit a tie-breaking home run in the bottom of the seventh and Felipe Lopez supplied a two-run double the next inning, as St. Louis defeated the scuffling Philadelphia Phillies, 5-1, in the third installment of a four-game series at Busch Stadium.

Albert Pujols stroked an RBI single for the Cardinals, who have won eight games in a row for the first time since a nine-game streak from August 27- September 5, 2004.

St. Louis’ Jaime Garcia (9-4) yielded a home run to Ryan Howard, one of four hits recorded by Philadelphia against the 23-year-old lefty in his seven innings of work.

Joe Blanton (3-6) allowed five runs — three earned in seven plus innings for Philadelphia, which fell to 1-6 on its eight-game road trip that started after the All-Star break.

The Phillies were held to one run for the second straight game and 23rd time this season.

(Sports Network) – This current road trip for the Philadelphia Phillies has been a complete disaster and they’ll try to regroup tonight in the third installment of a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals from Busch Stadium.

The Phillies have dropped three in a row and are 1-5 on an eight-game trek through Chicago and St. Louis. After losing three of four meetings with the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the Phillies have dropped the first two contests of this set in the Gateway City.

In Tuesday’s 7-1 loss, Phillies starter Jamie Moyer pitched only one inning before being removed due to a left elbow strain. Moyer is expected to land on the disabled list and allowed two hits in the first before giving way to youngster Drew Carpenter, who absorbed the loss for yielding three runs and five hits in three innings. Carpenter was brought up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley after the club optioned starter Kyle Kendrick to the Iron Pigs yesterday afternoon.

Danys Baez also gave up three runs in relief, while Shane Victorino drove in the lone run for the Phillies, who are seven games behind Atlanta for the top spot on the NL East standings.

“We’re positive, but it’s hard to keep a lot of spirit,” Phils manager Charlie Manuel said on the team’s site. “It seems like we’re always behind in the game, and we always have to try to come back. Every time we get somebody on base, I know that we’re trying too hard to knock them in.”

Placido Polanco and Jayson Werth both had two hits in defeat.

Phillies starter Joe Blanton has won his last two decisions but hasn’t figured into the outcome in any of his last four starts. Blanton will take the mound tonight and hopes to build off a solid performance his last time out in a 4-3 road loss against the Chicago Cubs last Thursday.

Blanton lasted seven innings at Wrigley Field and allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight batters. He remained at 3-5 in 14 starts and slightly lowered his ERA from 6.41 to 6.21.

The bulky right-hander, who is just 1-3 in seven road starts, lost to the Cardinals in his 2010 debut on May 3 in a 6-3 setback. Blanton gave up four runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings, falling to 3-1 in four career starts against the Cardinals.

St. Louis has ripped off seven straight wins and hasn’t won eight in a row since late in the 2004 campaign, when it was swept by the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.

The Cardinals, who lead the NL Central by a half-game ahead of Cincinnati, improved to 6-0 on their eight-game homestand versus the Dodgers and Phillies. They got another strong performance from ace Chris Carpenter last night, as he delivered eight innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts.

“I had good command of my sinkerball near the bottom of the strike zone,” said Carpenter. “I also threw some good curveballs and kept them off-balanced.”

Matt Holliday connected on a three-run homer, while Randy Winn added a two-run shot in the victory. Winn also went deep in Monday’s win in which the Cardinals belted four homers en route to an 8-4 victory. Since June 18th Holliday owns 11 homers and 31 RBI.

The Cardinals hope that Jaime Garcia can keep his promising season intact when he gets the call tonight. Garcia is 5-2 in his past seven decisions, but hasn’t factored in the outcome over his previous two trips to the bump.

Garcia tossed just 3 1/3 innings in an 8-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last Thursday and yielded two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. He is 8-4 in 18 starts with a 2.27 ERA and 3-1 in eight outings at Busch Stadium.

The left-hander beat the Phillies back on May 3 at Citizens Bank Park with six innings of one-run ball and six K’s in a 6-3 triumph. Garcia is 1-1 in three games (1 start) against Philadelphia.

The Phillies had a four-game winning streak in the Gateway City come to an end Monday night.

(Sports Network) – Home runs are not easy to hit, but the St. Louis Cardinals made it their job in last night’s win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The NL Central-leading Cardinals will try to go deep again Tuesday in the second installment of this four-game series at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals were down by two in the fifth inning of Monday’s game before Albert Pujols cracked a two-run homer followed by solo shots from Allen Craig and Skip Schumaker one out later to take the lead for good. Randy Winn then led off the sixth inning with a home run for the Cardinals, who went on to post an 8-4 victory, their sixth in a row.

Pujols collected two hits and three runs batted in, while Jon Jay went 2-for-3 with an RBI in a winning effort. Blake Hawksworth managed to pick up the win even though he gave up four runs and 10 hits over six innings of work.

“I got us in a hole early, but they picked me up and got the ‘W’,” Hawksworth said.

St. Louis was coming off a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers and is 5-0 on an eight-game homestand. It also sits a half-game ahead of Cincinnati in the NL Central standings.

The Cardinals have a good shot at staying on top in the division with Chris Carpenter slated to take the mound Tuesday night. Carpenter ended a three- start winless streak (0-2) the last time out on Thursday in a 7-1 win over the visiting Dodgers, as he tossed eight innings of one-run ball with six K’s.

Carpenter pushed his mark to 10-3 in 20 starts to go along with a 3.16 earned run average. The right-hander and 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner is 7-2 in 11 home starts this season and will make his ninth career start against the Phillies. Carpenter is 4-2 with a less desirable 5.73 ERA in his first eight appearances against Philadelphia.

The Cardinals are 37-21 in games started by Adam Wainwright, Carpenter and Jaime Garcia this season.

Philadelphia’s start of the second half hasn’t gone as planned, having dropped two straight and four of five games since the All-Star break. The Phillies, who entered the midway point of the season with a four-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, got a rough outing from starter Kyle Kendrick last night.

Kendrick was 4-0 in his career against St. Louis before surrendering seven runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings of work. Chad Durbin gave up the only run in relief for the Phillies, who are now six games off the lead in the National League East Division.

“My command was off all night. I was falling behind hitters,” Kendrick said.

Shane Victorino had two RBI and Ryan Howard chipped in a pair of hits and knocked in a run in defeat. Jimmy Rollins had an RBI as well for the Phillies, who recently lost three of four games in Chicago and are 18-12 against NL Central foes in 2010.

Jamie Moyer has fared well in his career against St. Louis, going 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 12 games (11 starts), and will take the mound Tuesday. Moyer has lost three straight starts since a personal three-game winning streak and lasted just three innings in Thursday’s 12-6 road setback against the Cubs.

Moyer allowed six runs and five hits to fall to 9-9 in 18 starts to go along with a 4.88 earned run average. The veteran lefty is 4-6 in 10 road starts this season.

The Phillies had a four-game winning streak in the Gateway City come to an end last night. They still lead the 2010 season series by a 3-2 count.
