Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Carlos Ruiz doubled home the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Philadelphia to a remarkable 10-9 comeback win over Los Angeles in the rubber match of a three- game set.

Jonathan Broxton (4-4) came on to protect a 9-6 lead only to hit Placido Polanco and walk both Mike Sweeney and Jayson Werth to load the bases with nobody out in the ninth. Ben Francisco hit a potential double play ball that went right between third baseman Casey Blake’s legs and out into left field to allow Polanco and Sweeney to score and slice a one-time seven run deficit to 9-8.

Ruiz then clobbered a 1-1 slider near the top of the wall in left-center to chase home Werth and Francisco to complete the comeback and lead the Phillies to their 15th win in their last 17 home games.

Danys Baez (3-3) worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win for Philadelphia, which closed to within two games of front-running Atlanta in the NL East.

Ronald Belisario took the hill for LA with a seven-run cushion in the eighth and yielded a two-run single to Werth that trimmed the lead to 9-4. Werth advanced to second base on a balk and scored on a double by Francisco that knocked the right-hander out of the game.

Kenley Jansen took over and gave up a one-out run-scoring single to Wilson Valdez that brought Philadelphia to within three and George Sherrill out of the bullpen. The veteran left-hander set down pinch-hitter Domonic Brown before Jimmy Rollins walked and Raul Ibanez bounced out to end the threat.

The visitors pushed their lead to 9-2 in the eighth as they put two men on against J.C. Romero, who was replaced on the hill by Jose Contreras, who allowed RBI hits to Casey Blake, Matt Kemp and Jamey Carroll.

Ronnie Belliard, Kemp and Carroll delivered consecutive run-scoring singles with two outs in the first inning to stake the Dodgers to a 3-0 lead.

The Phillies got on the board in the second when Ruiz singled, moved to third base on a Valdez double and scored on a Joe Blanton groundout.

Werth led off the fourth inning with a single, stole second base and scored on a one-out single by Ruiz just past diving second baseman Ryan Theriot out into center field for a 3-2 game.

Los Angeles got the run back in the top of the fifth on a Belliard sacrifice fly that scored Theriot, who deftly slid around the tag of Ruiz at the plate just ahead of Ibanez’s throw from left field.

Blanton walked Theriot to load the bases with two outs in the sixth and was lifted from the game and replaced by Chad Durbin, who got Andre Ethier to ground out to end the threat.

The Phillies right-hander allowed four runs on eight hits and four walks while fanning three over 5 2/3 innings.

Durbin, though, was not so fortunate in the seventh, as James Loney singled and scored when Kemp followed with a home run to left field.

Los Angeles starter Clayton Kershaw had set down 10 in a row before Shane Victorino, activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, drew a two-out walk in the home seventh as a pinch-hitter and stole second base. Rollins then walked as Kershaw was removed from the game in favor of Hong-Chih Kuo, who got Ibanez to fly out to end the frame.

The LA southpaw yielded two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four in 6 2/3 frames.

The Phillies are 10-4-4 in their 18 home series this year, while the Dodgers slumped to 7-12 in their 19 road series…Ibanez went hitless in five at-bats and had a career-high 18-game hit streak snapped…Polanco was 2-for-4 and pushed his hit streak to 11 games…Blanton’s RBI was his first of the year and third of his career. He is 1-0 in five career starts against Los Angeles…Kershaw is 0-3 in five career turns against the Phillies.

The Phillies have activated Shane Victorino off the 15 day DL today and he will be eligible to play tonight, but is not in the starting lineup. Victorino had a big night in Lehigh Valley last night going 3-4 with a triple, HR, and 3 RBI.

It’s been widely expected that when Victorino came back up that Domonic Brown would be sent back down to AAA to get more regular at bats, however with Ross Gload’s injury last night the Phils are in need of another bat. So for now Brown will stay up and Antonio Bastardo will go down.

If Gload is able to come back in a few days, Brown will likely be sent back down until September 1.

(Sports Network) – If the Dodgers plan on leaving the City of Brotherly Love with a series win over Philadelphia this evening, starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw may have to do something he’s never done before.

Kershaw is scheduled to pitch in Thursday’s finale of a three-game series against a Phillies team he hasn’t been able to beat in four career regular- season starts. He is 0-3 with a 6.64 earned run average in his career against Philadelphia, which previously beat him during last year’s NLCS.

The left-hander has lost two straight starts overall and three of his last four decisions. Kershaw was last in action during Friday’s 6-3 loss versus Washington and yielded six runs and seven hits in six innings. Kershaw, who fell to 10-7 in 23 starts and raised his ERA to 3.19, owns a 4-4 mark in 10 outings as the guest this season.

Los Angeles is still alive in the playoff race and sits 5 1/2 games off the NL Wild Card lead. It’s also eight games behind San Diego for the top spot in the National League West Division and suffered a 2-0 loss last night after taking Tuesday’s series opener by a 15-9 score. Phils starter Roy Oswalt held the Dodgers in check with seven shutout innings, while Scott Podsednik ended with a team-best three hits for the Dodgers.

Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley pitched well enough for the win, but allowed two runs with three walks and three K’s to absorb his seventh loss (9-7).

“You just can’t make too many mistakes in these types of games,” Billingsley said after LA’s three-game winning streak came to an end.

Philadelphia is in the same situation as Los Angeles and is also fighting for a playoff spot. It is tied with Cincinnati at one game behind San Francisco in the NL Wild Card standings and remained 2 1/2 games in back of Atlanta for NL East bragging rights.

Oswalt was on point in his home debut for the Phils, as he struck out five and walked two batters for the win. Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge both tossed a scoreless innings of relief, with Lidge picking up his 15th save.

“I pitched here before and I like the mound here,” Oswalt said of his home debut with the Phillies. “It really wasn’t too bad.”

Raul Ibanez extended his hitting streak to a career-best 18 games with two hits and an RBI. Ibanez is batting .409 with four homers and 17 RBI during his run. Domonic Brown drove in the other run for the Phillies, who have won seven of their last nine games. The Phillies saw another player go down because of injury after Ross Gload exited the game with a groin problem. Veteran Mike Sweeney replaced him and could start tonight for the Phils, who are already without Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Shane Victorino.

The Phillies would like to see Joe Blanton keep the winning tradition going when he toes the rubber tonight. Blanton has posted back-to-back no-decisions and is coming off a strong start last Friday in a 7-5 win over the New York Mets. Blanton held the despised NL East foes to a pair of runs in seven innings, and remained at 4-6 in 18 starts to go along with a 5.65 ERA.

Blanton is 3-2 in nine home starts this season and will make his fifth career start against Los Angeles tonight. He is 1-0 with a 2.88 ERA in four career matchups — all starts — with the Dodgers.

Philadelphia took all three matchups at home in defeating Los Angeles in five games during last year’s NLCS, but the Dodgers have won in three of their last five visits to Citizens Bank Park in the regular season.

Last night, Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick was awful and the bullpen was arguably even worse. Tonight, starter Roy Oswalt was superb and the bullpen was arguably even better.

Oswalt went seven shutout innings giving up 5 hits and striking out 5 in his home debut. Ryan Madson & Brad Lidge closed it out striking out 4 of the Dodgers last 6 batters.

Domonic Brown & Raul Ibanez had the only two RBIs of the game. Ibanez stretched his career long hit streak to 18 games. Jimmy Rollins extended his streak to 8 games.

It wouldn't be a Phillies game without someone going down injured... this time it was Ross Gload who pulled up lame on a double and had to leave the game.
(Sports Network) – Roy Oswalt has yet to pitch at home since his recent trade to the Philadelphia Phillies, or record a victory with his new team for that matter. The veteran hurler will take another shot at accomplishing that second goal when he makes his Citizens Bank Park debut in a Philadelphia uniform in tonight’s matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Oswalt has made two starts since being acquired from the Houston Astros just prior to the non-waiver trade deadline, recording a loss and a no-decision in those outings. The three-time All-Star surrendered five runs (four earned) in six innings of a July 30 setback at Washington, but bounced back with a sharper effort against Florida this past Thursday. Oswalt shut out the Marlins over the game’s first six innings, but was touched for a pair of runs in the seventh and wound up not factoring in the final outcome of Philadelphia’s 5-4 win.

The right-hander has dropped three straight decisions overall and has endured a trying 2010 season, as he leads the majors with 13 losses despite having registered a solid 3.50 earned run average in 22 starts. A lack of run support has certainly played a role in that high loss total, with Oswalt’s teams having mustered only one run total over the course of his last three defeats.

Judging by past results, Oswalt is going to enjoy pitching in his new home stadium. During his tenure with the Astros, the 32-year-old prevailed in all four of his starts at Citizens Bank Park and owns a 2.60 lifetime ERA at the venue.

Oswalt also sports a 6-3 mark along with a 3.47 ERA in 10 career encounters (nine starts) with the Dodgers, whom he’s yet to face this season.

The Phillies will be asking their new addition to help the team put behind a lopsided loss in Tuesday’s opener of this three-game series. Los Angeles started off a week-long road trip on a very high note, busting out 18 hits in outslugging Philadelphia by a 15-9 count.

The Dodgers roared out to a 7-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings and had the first six players in the lineup collect multiple hits in the much-needed win. Andre Ethier led the charge by going 4-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored, while Jay Gibbons had three hits — including a homer — and knocked in three runs on the night. Casey Blake added a two-run homer and drove home two more runs with a single for Los Angeles, which had lost nine of its last 10 on the road coming in.

“We did some things early in the game, we moved some people, we manufactured some stuff and then we had some big hits,” Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. “I was very pleased with the offense.”

Los Angeles’ offensive barrage made a winner out of Vicente Padilla (6-3), despite the ex-Phillie allowing four runs and six hits over the first five innings. He was still able to outpitch counterpart Kyle Kendrick (7-5), who was tagged for six runs (five earned) and eight hits before being lifted after only 3 1/3 frames.

“It’s frustrating, you never want to pitch bad,” said Kendrick afterward. “You’re going to have bad outings. Obviously you don’t want to have them right now, it’s a tough time to have them.”

Tuesday’s loss, only the fourth in the past 18 contests for the Phillies, spoiled outstanding performances from both Ross Gload and rookie sensation Dominic Brown. Gload belted a pair of two-run homers and finished 3-for-5 on the night, while Brown went deep for the first time in his big-league career and also knocked in four runs for the game.

Raul Ibanez went 1-for-4 for the Phillies last night to extend his career-best hitting streak to 17 games. The outfielder is batting .397 (25-for-63) with four homers and 16 RBI over the course of his tear.

Philadelphia fell to 2 1/2 games back of first-place Atlanta in the National League East race after the Braves defeated Houston on Tuesday, and remain a game behind Wild Card co-leaders Cincinnati and San Francisco at the moment.

The Dodgers were able to gain some ground in the Wild Card standings with last night’s victory, with Torre’s squad now trailing the Reds and Giants by 4 1/2 games.

Chad Billingsley will attempt to pitch Los Angeles to a fourth straight win and maintain his recent strong form when he opposes Oswalt in tonight’s tilt. The 2009 All-Star has posted an outstanding 0.98 ERA along with a 2-1 record over his past four starts and had a string of 25 consecutive scoreless innings end in Thursday’s matchup with San Diego.

Billingsley not only lost his streak against the Padres, but the game as well after giving up three runs in six innings of a 5-0 loss. The Dodgers have had trouble scoring for the right-hander as of late, managing a total of just five runs over his last four starts.

The 26-year-old is 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in four regular-season starts versus Philadelphia, but was shelled in playoff appearances at Citizens Bank Park in each of the past two years. Billingsley lasted only 3 1/3 innings in a relief role during the Dodgers’ 11-0 loss to the Phillies in Game 3 of last October’s NL Championship Series.

Philadelphia took all three matchups at home in defeating Los Angeles in five games during last year’s NLCS, but the Dodgers have won in three of their last four visits to Citizens Bank Park in the regular season.

The Phillies had been red hot at Citizens Bank, while the Dodgers had been struggling on the road. Then Kyle Kendrick happened. The maddeningly inconsistent 5th starter got lit up tonight to the 6 runs(5 earned), 8 hits, and a couple walks. Amazingly enough, that wouldn't be enough to sink the stubborn Phillies offense... But David Herndon would pitch 2 innings and give up another 4 runs to do the Phils in.

The Phillies did manage a little rally in the ninth loading the bases with two outs for Domonic Brown, who doubled in two runs to cut the deficit to 6 runs... but at that point Charlie Manuel was out of bats on the bench and had to sub in Cole Hamels to hit for Chad Durbin. Hamels flied out to end the game.

A major bright spot for the Phils tonight was the rookie Dom Brown who had arguably his best night at the plate hitting his first major league homer and knocking in four runs.

The Phils will no doubt expect a better effort from their starting pitching tomorrow night as Roy Oswalt takes the mound in his home debut.

(Sports Network) - Outstanding play at home has helped the Philadelphia Phillies close in on first place in the National League's East Division, while the Los Angeles Dodgers are in danger of falling out of the playoff picture in part due to the team's lousy recent performances on the road.

The Dodgers will attempt to end those woes when they head to Citizens Bank Park tonight to take on the red-hot Phillies in the first meeting between the teams since last year's National League Championship Series.

Philadelphia has been on fire as of late, winning 14 of its last 17 contests to move within 1 1/2 games of first-place Atlanta in the NL East standings and just one back of San Francisco for the lead in the league's Wild Card race. The two-time defending NL champions have been even more dominant on their home turf over the past month, having compiled a stellar 13-1 mark at Citizens Bank Park since July 8.

The Phillies did have a 12-game home win streak halted in a 1-0 setback to Johan Santana and the New York Mets on Saturday, but bounced back to post a 6-5 decision in Sunday's finale of that three-game series. Raul Ibanez belted a three-run homer and Jayson Werth added a solo shot in support of Philadelphia ace Roy Halladay, who notched his 14th win of the season despite struggling near the end of his seven-inning stint.

Werth finished 3-for-4 and Ross Gload contributed an RBI single for the Phillies, who scored five times in the third inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and staved off a Mets comeback attempt later on.

Halladay (14-8) was touched for a pair of runs in the first inning but held the Mets scoreless until allowing Angel Pagan's RBI single in the sixth. New York scored twice more off the All-Star right-hander in the seventh to pull within 6-5, but Halladay recovered and struck out Carlos Beltran with two men on to prevent further damage.

Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge then protected the one-run lead over the final two innings, with Lidge earning his 14th save with a scoreless ninth.

"It's a little easier to sleep at night taking a win out of it, especially against a team we need to win games against," Halladay told the Phillies' official site afterward.

Ibanez, meanwhile, has helped carry a Philadelphia squad that's presently without sluggers Ryan Howard and Chase Utley and center fielder Shane Victorino during the team's outstanding stretch. The veteran outfielder is riding a career-high 16-game hitting streak and is batting .407 (24-for-59) with four homer and 16 RBI over the course of the tear.

Ibanez has hit .321 (9-for-28) with a pair of home runs lifetime against Vicente Padilla, who'll be taking the mound for the Dodgers in the opener of this three-game set. The one-time Phillie enters tonight's clash off his best showing of the season, a complete-game shutout of San Diego last Wednesday in which he yielded just two hits and struck out nine Padres hitters.

Padilla has been hard to score upon in just about all his recent starts. In seven outings since June 30, the surly right-hander has produced a sensational 1.13 ERA and limited the opposition to a .150 average while amassing a 4-1 record. He's allowed two runs or fewer in every one of those assignments.

The 32-year-old, who pitched for the Phillies from 2000-05, has only faced his former club one time previously during the regular season. That took place in 2008 while with Texas, with Padilla tagged for seven runs over six innings in a losing effort.

Padilla did start twice against Philadelphia during last October's NLCS, pitching well in a no-decision at Los Angeles in Game 2 but surrendering six runs in three innings to lose the deciding Game 5 held at Citizens Bank Park.

The Dodgers dropped all three games played in Philadelphia in the NLCS, but did take two of three from the Phils at Citizens Bank Park during last year's regular season.

Los Angeles would settle for a win of any kind on the road right now, as Joe Torre's squad has lost five in a row and nine of its last 10 as the guest. That poor mark is one reason why the Dodgers have fallen 5 1/2 games behind the rival Giants in the Wild Card chase and seven back of San Diego for the top spot in the NL West.

The Dodgers do enter this seven-game trip, which also includes a series with the NL East-leading Braves, having won four of their last six tests and closing out a homestand with back-to-back victories over Washington. After prevailing in 10 innings on Saturday, Los Angeles struck for four first-inning runs en route to an 8-3 triumph over the Nationals in Sunday's finale.

Jamey Carroll highlighted the big inning with a two-run single and went 3- for-3 for Los Angeles, while Ronnie Belliard collected a pair of hits and scored three times to help back six solid innings out of trade-deadline pickup Ted Lilly.

Lilly (5-8), acquired from the Chicago Cubs just prior to the July 31 non- waiver deadline, permitted three runs -- two of which came on back-to-back homers from Mike Morse and Justin Maxwell in the second inning -- and five hits while fanning six to win his second straight start as a Dodger.

"I was throwing the ball a little flat early," said Lilly. "After the home runs I was able to get on top of it more. We were able to put pressure on them by the way we ran the bases."

While the Dodgers will be counting on another sharp display from Padilla, the Phillies will be seeking a fourth straight strong game out of Kyle Kendrick in tonight's opener. Since being rocked for seven runs in five innings in a July 19 loss at St. Louis and briefly sent to the minors afterward, the lanky right-hander has gone 2-0 with an impressive 1.77 ERA over a three-start span.

Kendrick was solid once again in a 7-2 win at Florida this past Wednesday, giving up two runs and scattering eight hits without walking a batter over the first six innings. He's been excellent at Citizens Bank Park as well lately, having allowed just three runs over a combined 20 innings spanning his past three home starts.

The 25-year-old is 2-2 in four career encounters with the Dodgers, despite having pitched to a 7.29 ERA in those games. Both of those wins took place in Philadelphia, however.
