Speaking after the Eagles 28-27 preseason win over the Jaguars, Andy Reid was generally happy with his teams’ effort.

“All in all, I thought it was a good effort. There obviously are some things that we need to work on. We need to do a better job in the red zone. It was nice to get [K] David [Akers] some kicks, but not that many. When you work hard to get into the red zone, you want to make sure you punch it in. The kickoff return units, in particular the second and third groups, need some work. All in all, I thought the effort was there. The [starting] defense only got six plays, but they played well for those six. The offense was able to sustain some drives which really cut down on the first quarter.”

Andy also singled out WR/RB/PR Chad Hall for praise.

“I mentioned in the press conference [the other day] that I thought when given the opportunity, he could play all of the positions – running back, receiver, and the return game. I thought he excelled in all of them. He was a secure catcher of punts, and it looked like he made good decisions in terms of when to let the ball go and when to fair catch it. He also had a nice play from the receiver position and he ran the ball well. I thought he had a productive day.”

Finally, he was happy the chemistry and camaraderie on the sidelines.

“From my standpoint, it did. I don’t know what it looked like or other people perceived it to be, but it seemed like there was great energy and confidence. It was great to see the guys on the sideline who were not in the game supporting the younger guys when they were in the game. When the ones came out, they were all off the bench supporting the twos and the threes, which you like to see. That was encouraging.”

The “new era” of Eagles football started on a positive note tonight as the Eagles first teamers impressed in the teams’ 28-27 preseason win. The Eagles first team offense racked up 203 yards to Jaguars’ 10 in the first quarter while the starters were still in the game.

Kevin Kolb led two methodical drives with the first team offense that pretty much encapsulated everything Andy Reid is hoping it can be with Kolb at the helm. His first drive went 65 yards on 9 plays, while the second drive went 12 plays for 53 yards. They moved down the field efficiently and pretty much at will. Both drives they stalled in the red zone, but that will be more of a concern if it happens in the regular season. All told, the two and half possessions that the first team offense was on the field for ate up about eleven minutes of clock in the first quarter.

The first team defense was arguably even better. They did not allow a first down and they held the Jaguars to just 10 total yards including – 2 on the ground. The first quarter also displayed some solid tackling from corners Ellis Hobbs and Asante Samuel. You heard that right… Asante Samuel wrapped a man up and properly tackled him.

Michael Vick and Martell Mallet each rushed for TDs and David Akers hit on 5 FGs to round out the Eagles scoring.

Kevin Kolb’s night was over after one quarter that saw both of his drives end in field goals. Kolb completed 6 of 11 passes for 95 yards and was satisfied with his preseason debut.

"It was good. Obviously, when you get down into the red zone you want to score points, but both drives were successful. We racked up some yards there and put six points on the board, then had a chance there with our third one. Overall, I thought it was good, but we’ve got to get better in the red zone."

He was asked what the offense was hoping to accomplish tonight.

"Just execute. That’s our number one thing. With the talent that we have, we feel like we can execute and be consistent, and I’m not even saying I was consistent. We feel like we can put up a lot of points. Like I said, there were some mistakes, but I thought it was a good start overall."

DeSean Jackson was happy with Kolb's debut as well

“I like how the momentum started in the huddle and then [Kolb] he delivered the play. We got out on the line of scrimmage, and we were ready to go. The energy is up there and the intensity is up there, and we are just starting something new and that’s the biggest thing that we’re doing right now and we just have to continue what we’re doing.”

Our long national nightmare is over and the NFL has finally returned. Sort of... The games don't count yet, but for now the watered down vanilla version of football we get in the preseason will be enough to satiate us.The Eagles host the Jaguars in their preseason opener and Kevin Kolb will make his first start of the post Donovan McNabb era. Andy Reid said that Kolb will play the first quarter tonight.

As far as rotations you can base it around, and this goes for both offense and defense, the quarterbacks [QB Kevin] Kolb will play the first quarter, [QB Michael] Vick will play the second quarter and half of the third quarter, [QB] Mike Kafka will play the second half of the third quarter and the fourth quarter. And then that's kind of how it goes, the first unit, the second unit and the third unit."

He also set out his expectations for Kolb tonight.

"I think what you look from a quarterback to do is to execute the offense and to lead the offense and to make sure that he manages the game the proper way. So that's how I approach it with him, I think that with any quarterback in the National Football League. If they think that they are going to complete every ball than that's a good thing."

It will really just be important to see Kolb look crisp and confident out there. In preseason, Andy Reid runs a very basic and vanilla offensive scheme, so the important thing is for the team to win individual battles and focus on execution. Kolb says the team is excited.

"I think there's going to be a little bit more excitement. Just because, like you said, we haven't been out there yet, so we're looking to execute perfectly. We want to make sure we just keep taking those steps forward. We don't want to settle. Being flat is not going to be an issue. Guys are pumped yesterday when we were doing the install. There's obviously plenty of energy on this team, there always has been and I don't think that will be an issue for us."

The offensive line will certainly be an important thing to watch tonight as it's filled with question marks. Starters Todd Herremans(foot) & Jamaal Jackson(knee) won't play. Stacy Andrews will start at RG fully healthy and with a year in the system under his belt. Andrews was rehabbing from knee surgery last year and failed to ever make an impact, he'll be looking to bounce back in 2010 and could be a huge boost if he becomes the dominant run blocker he was with the Bengals again. Mike McGlynn will get the start at center, which is a surprise since Nick Cole has held the starting job in Jackson's absence since last year. McGlynn should certainly see tonight as a huge opportunity for himself.

And of course, there's always the Michael Vick show... Vick will play a quarter and a half and more than anything it'll be interesting to see if athletically he looks anything like the Vick of old. Last year we could plainly see he didn't have the speed or confidence that he had in Atlanta, but if you've been down to camp this year you would have seen a different Michael Vick. He looked in a great shape and was moving around very quickly, it'll be interesting to see how much better he looks after having a full offseason in an NFL training program.

More than anything, you just want to see everyone come out healthy. These are just practice games & the final score is irrelevant. If the Eagles win some individual battles, be sound fundamentally, and stay healthy tonight will have been a win no matter what the final score is.
