Shane Victorino knocked in one run and scored another as the Phillies beat the New York Mets 3-1 in a rain soaked affair at Citi Field.

While Victorino knocked in the Phillies first run, it should be noted that Jimmy Rollins' effort on the basebaths is what really produced it. After blooping a single to left, Jimmy stole both second and third before Shane doubled him home.

Good Kyle Kendrick showed up and went 6 2/3 strong innings giving up just one run on a solo homer to Jose Reyes. Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge(who has never blown a save against the Mets) pitched a perfect ninth as the Phillies pulled even with the San Francisco Giants in the wild card race. They still sit 2.5 games behind the Braves for the NL East lead.

(Sports Network) – Mike Pelfrey may have gotten a once-promising season back on track with his recent performance. The New York Mets pitcher will attempt to build off that encouraging display when he takes on a Philadelphia Phillies squad that’s had its troubles scoring runs at Citi Field this season.

After going 0-4 and surrendering four or more runs six times during a frustrating seven-start stretch that began on June 30, Pelfrey was finally unable to regain the form that made him one of the NL’s top pitchers during the early portion of this season. The towering right-hander outdueled Colorado ace Ubaldo Jimenez in a 1-0 victory over the Rockies Tuesday at Citi Field, yielding only four hits and one walk over seven shutout innings.

Pelfrey was sensational over the first 2 1/2 months of this campaign, amassing a 9-1 record and a 2.42 earned run average through his first 13 starts, then went into an extended funk afterward. The former first-round pick lost five of his next six decisions and posted an awful 7.74 ERA in nine subsequent outings, and hadn’t lasted beyond 5 2/3 innings in seven straight appearances before Tuesday’s gem.

One of Pelfrey’s early-season wins came against the Phillies at Citi Field back on May 27, with the 26-year-old twirling seven shutout innings of three- hit in a 3-0 triumph. He was also hit hard in a May 1 start in Philadelphia, permitting six runs and eight hits in four innings to take the loss.

For his career, Pelfrey is 5-3 with a 4.83 ERA in 11 encounters with the Phillies, and he sports a solid 7-2 mark with a 3.14 ERA over 13 home starts this year.

Philadelphia finally ended a string of four straight road losses to the Mets — all of which came via a shutout — with a 4-0 triumph in last night’s second test of this three-game series.

The Phillies were outscored by a 16-0 margin in losing three straight times to New York at Citi Field from May 25-27, then mustered a mere one hit — a single from starting pitcher Cole Hamels — against the Mets’ R.A. Dickey in a 1-0 defeat in Friday’s opener.

Philadelphia countered with a masterful effort from Roy Halladay (15-8) last night, as the staff ace held the Mets to four hits and struck out seven without a walk over the first eight innings to register his 15th win of the season.

“He don’t like to give anything up cause he’s stubborn,” said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel about Halladay. “At the same time, even he gets hit sometimes. He was real good [Saturday], his stuff was crisp.”

Philadelphia finally ended its Citi Field scoring drought in the third inning, when Halladay reached on an infield single, moved to second on a Jimmy Rollins base hit, and scored on Placido Polanco’s single to center.

The Phillies’ other three runs came as a result of two Mets’ errors. Rollins crossed the plate in the fifth when New York second baseman Ruben Tejada threw wildly on a double-play attempt, while a miscue by third baseman David Wright enabled two more runs to score in the sixth.

Halladay’s strong pitching and New York’s shoddy defense made for a tough-luck night for Mets starter Pat Misch, called up from Triple-A Buffalo prior to the game. The lefty was charged with all four runs in six innings of work, but only one was earned.

With the win, Philadelphia closed within two games of Atlanta for first place in the NL East after the Braves lost to Los Angeles on Saturday. The Phillies are just one back of San Francisco for the top spot in the league’s Wild Card race.

Kyle Kendrick draws the assignment for Philadelphia tonight and will be seeking to atone for a brutal showing on Tuesday, when he was rocked for six runs (five earned) and eight hits before exiting after 3 1/3 innings of a loss to Los Angeles.

The right-hander had been pitching well prior to that setback, going 2-0 and allowing just four runs in a combined 20 1/3 innings in a three-start stretch against Colorado, Arizona and Florida.

Kendrick has had an up-and-down season for the Phillies in 2010, bringing a 7-5 record and 4.60 ERA over 24 appearances (22 starts) into tonight’s tilt. His biggest problem has been with the long ball, as he’s served up 21 homers in 131 innings of work.

The 25-year-old is 2-2 with a 3.34 ERA in six lifetime starts against the Mets, but was reached for four runs in five innings of a 9-1 defeat to New York at Citizens Bank Park on April 30. Wright, Jeff Francoeur and Rod Barajas all homered off Kendrick that night.

For the season, New York has won six of its 11 overall matchups with Philadelphia.

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) – Roy Halladay twirled eight scoreless innings to help the Philadelphia Phillies take a 4-0 win over the New York Mets in the second of a three-game set.

Halladay (15-8) gave up just three hits and struck out six to win his fifth straight start and added a hit and a run scored. He has now gone at least six innings in 51 straight road starts.

Placido Polanco had a pair of hits and an RBI while Shane Victorino added two hits and a run scored for the Phillies, who have won three of their last four and recovered from R.A. Dickey’s one-hitter in a 1-0 loss in the series opener.

Jose Reyes’ triple was the lone extra-base hit for the Mets, who had won three of four coming into the contest.

Pat Misch (0-1), making his first start of the season, went six innings and was charged with four runs — one earned — on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Before the game, the Mets activated closer Francisco Rodriguez from the restricted list after he served a two-game suspension handed down by the team due to an incident on Wednesday when he allegedly hit his girlfriend’s father, Carlos Pena.

Following the incident, he was taken into custody by police and later released. He issued an apology to the team and fans earlier on Saturday, then threw a scoreless ninth inning.

After 38 scoreless innings at Citi Field this season, the Phils finally worked a run across in the third. With two outs, Halladay punched a single off the glove of Reyes. Jimmy Rollins followed with a single and Polanco's base hit plated Halladay for a 1-0 lead.

Halladay retired the first nine batters he faced before Reyes led off the fourth with a triple. Halladay, though, stranded him there as he got Angel Pagan to groundout and then struck out David Wright and Carlos Beltran to end the frame.

The Phillies added another run in the fifth. With one out, Rollins walked and Polanco followed with a single. Raul Ibanez then hit a sharp grounded to second that looked like a double play ball, but Ruben Tejada's throw to second went into the outfield and Rollins scored for a 2-0 advantage.

Philly padded its lead in the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Rollins hit a simple grounder to third that went between the legs of Wright, allowing two runs to score for a 4-0 lead.

After stranding a Met on second in the sixth, Halladay set the Mets down in order in the seventh.

Chris Carter punched a two-out, pinch-hit single in the eighth, but Halladay struck out Reyes to end the frame.

Ryan Madson came on in the ninth to close things and got the first out, but then gave up consecutive singles to Wright and Beltran. Madson then struck out Ike Davis, but hit Fernando Davis with a pitch to load the bases. However, he struck out Josh Thole to end the game.

Game Notes

All five games between these two teams at Citi Field this season have featured shutout wins, with the Mets taking four of those...Misch had his contracted selected from Triple-A Buffalo before the game. To make room for Misch and Rodriguez, New York optioned pitchers Ryota Igarashi and Raul Valdes to Buffalo...The Phils have shut out their opponents 13 times this season while the Mets have been blanked 10 times.

(Sports Network) – The Philadelphia Phillies may possesses one of the National League’s most potent offenses at full strength, but those bats have been ice cold whenever the team has paid a visit to New York’s Citi Field this season.

Still in search of their first run on the road against the rival Mets in 2010, the Phillies hope to finally break out in tonight’s clash between the longtime NL East foes in the Big Apple.

Philadelphia was outscored by a 16-0 margin in losing three straight times to the Mets at Citi Field from May 25-27, and failed to generate any offense once again in Friday’s opener of this three-game series. The Phillies mustered only one hit — a sixth-inning single from starting pitcher Cole Hamels — against New York’s R.A. Dickey in a frustrating 1-0 defeat.

Just five days after being rocked for six runs and eight hits in three innings during a loss to the Phillies in Philadelphia, Dickey (8-5) surrendered just Hamels’ base hit and one walk while striking out seven batters to earn his second career shutout. The knuckleball specialist continued his season-long success at Citi Field, where he’s amassed a 5-1 record and a sensational 1.22 earned run average in six starts.

“There’s a nice comfort zone here for me,” Dickey said afterward. “It’s a nice park to pitch in, the ball feels good out of my hand. I was anxious to get back at them after my last outing.”

Hamels (7-9) went the distance as well, giving up just the one run and five hits while racking up eight strikeouts in eight innings. The left-hander’s only trouble came in the bottom of the sixth, when David Wright and Carlos Beltran hit back-to-back doubles to account for the game’s only score.

“They’re happy I’m able to go out there and plug away,” Hamels said of his team. "At the same time, we have to go get them [Saturday]. I think that’s the plan of attack. You’re bummed, but let’s put this one behind us because we need to get them [Saturday].

The Phillies, who remain without their top two sluggers in first baseman Ryan Howard and second baseman Chase Utley, dropped to three games behind first- place Atlanta in the NL East standings with last night’s result. The two-time defending NL champs are one game back of San Francisco for the lead in the league’s Wild Card race.

Philadelphia shouldn’t need to score too much to have a chance to avenge last night’s setback, with ace right-hander Roy Halladay set to take the mound tonight aiming for a fifth straight winning start. The All-Star hurler bested New York with a 10-strikeout performance this past Sunday at Citizens Bank Park, although he was reached for five runs and nine hits in a seven-inning stint.

Halladay had strung together three consecutive stellar outings prior to picking up his 14th win of the year last weekend, with the 2003 American League Cy Young Award honoree yielding just two runs over a span of 24 innings during that streak. He’s amassed an excellent 2.34 ERA for the season, fourth- best in the NL, in addition to leading the majors with eight complete games.

The 33-year-old has won both his starts against the Mets this season and is 4-2 with a 4.46 ERA over six lifetime meetings with New York. This will be Halladay’s first career appearance at Citi Field.

The Mets will call up Pat Misch from Triple-A Buffalo tonight to oppose Halladay and serve as the club’s fifth starter for the time being. The left- hander has put together a strong campaign for the Bisons, having produced an 11-4 record and a 3.23 ERA in 23 International League starts.

Misch, who turns 29 on Wednesday, spent a good portion of last season with the Mets and went 3-4 with a 4.12 ERA in 22 appearances, all but seven of which came in relief. He pitched four times against the Phillies out of the bullpen in 2009 and had an 0-1 record with a 2.35 ERA over 7 2/3 innings.

The Western Michigan product did face Philadelphia twice as a starter during a previous tenure with the San Francisco Giants and is 0-1 with a 5.09 ERA in six lifetime games against the Phils.

The Mets will have their regular closer back for tonight’s tilt should they need him, with Francisco Rodriguez having finished serving a team-issued two- game suspension on Friday after being arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend’s father earlier in the week.

With Friday’s verdict, New York has now won six of 10 overall matchups with the Phillies this season.

Carlos Ruiz has been scratched from tonight’s Phillies lineup against the Mets due to what Charlie Manuel called a sore quad. Former Met Brian Schneider will start in his place.

Ruiz was the hero of last night’s game with a walkoff double that capped a Phils comeback which became with them down 9-2 in the 8th and winning 10-9 in the bottom of the 9th.

Ruiz told reporters that he expects to play tomorrow.

(Sports Network) - It's been almost two months since the Mets last won back- to-back games. The way Cole Hamels pitched against them last time out, coupled with the Phillies' furious rally on Thursday night, New York figures to have its hands full tonight.

Philadelphia will try to score its first runs of the season this year at Citi Field as it renews its rivalry with hosting New York with the first of three straight games.

The Mets are just 4-6 in August and haven't strung together back-to-back wins since June 22-23. They'll get a chance to do so tonight thanks to Johan Santana's brilliant outing versus the Rockies.

Santana, who threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings in beating the Phillies last Saturday, went the distance in a five-hitter on Thursday afternoon, striking out 10 in a 4-0 victory.

Jose Reyes added two hits, an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases for the Mets, who gave All-Star David Wright the day off as he is mired in a 2-for-33 slump over his last nine games.

New York was also without closer Francisco Rodriguez after placing the embattled pitcher on the restricted list. Rodriguez was charged with third- degree assault for allegedly punching his father-in-law in the face in the Citi Field clubhouse on Wednesday night.

The Mets struggled versus Hamels last Saturday, but Santana bailed them out in the 1-0 victory. Hamels allowed the lone run, a seventh-inning homer, over seven innings, striking out 11 in a tough-luck loss. The left-hander has lost both starts versus the Mets this year despite allowing just three earned runs over 13 1/3 innings, and is 2-6 lifetime against them with a 3.71 earned run average.

Hamels hadn't factored into the decision of his last four starts before that setback and is just 7-8 on the season with a 3.45 ERA despite allowing one run or less in four of his last six starts. Philadelphia, meanwhile, has scored two runs or less in nine of his 23 outings this year.

The 26-year-old could be in line for some support tonight after the Phillies rallied from seven runs down in the eighth inning to claim a 10-9 victory over the Dodgers on Thursday night and pull within two games of the first-place Braves in the NL East.

The Phillies plated four runs in the eighth frame to get within 9-6 before getting the rest of the runs off LA closer Jonathan Broxton. Ben Francisco hit a potential double play ball with the bases loaded, but the ball went under Casey Blake's legs allowing two runs to score. Carlos Ruiz then capped the comeback with a two-run hit to left-center for the Phils' eighth win in 10 games and 15th in their last 17 home games.

"Our approach is that we have to see a lot of pitches, then you have to get a good pitch to hit, " said Ruiz, who is hitting .377 with 17 RBI since July 27. "So that's what we did tonight. We were working the count. I was going to the plate relaxed and thinking '[manager] Charlie [Manuel] gave me the go for it' to get a hit in what was a bunt situation."

Raul Ibanez went hitless in five at-bats and had a career-high 18-game hit streak snapped, but Placido Polanco was 2-for-4 and pushed his hit streak to 11 games.
