Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Prince Fielder's three-run homer in the first inning proved to be all Milwaukee needed, as the Brewers held off the Phillies, 6-2, to avoid a three-game sweep at Citizens Bank Park.

Rickie Weeks had three hits, scored a run, and drove in a run for the Brewers, who went just 1-5 against Philadelphia this season. Corey Hart also had an RBI and a run scored.

Randy Wolf (11-10), who pitched the first eight years of his career in Philadelphia, gave up two runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings to improve to 4-1 over his last six starts. The left-hander also struck out five and walked two.

Carlos Ruiz hit a two-run double in the second inning for the Phillies, who saw a five-game win streak come to an end. Philadelphia, though, remained one game back of the Braves in the NL East after Atlanta lost in extra frames to the Marlins.

Kyle Kendrick (9-8) lasted just four innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. The right-hander has allowed a total of 18 runs over his four starts.

Fielder's homer put the Brewers ahead 3-0 in the first inning. Hart singled and Ryan Braun doubled before Fielder smacked Kendrick's offering into the upper deck in right.

The Phillies then put a two-spot on the board in the second. Jayson Werth doubled and Ben Francisco singled to put men on the corners with one out. Ruiz stepped to the plate and laced a double just inside the chalk down the left- field line to plate both.

The Brewers responded with a run in the third. Weeks led off with a single and came around to score on Hart's double. Milwaukee went on to strand runners on first and second.

The visitors tacked on another run in the fourth when George Kottaras doubled and scored on Weeks' two-out base hit for a 5-2 game.

The Phillies had a chance to make things interesting in the eighth. John Axford walked Ryan Howard with one out. After Werth struck out, Shane Victorino walked. The runners moved up one base on a wild pitch. Francisco, though, flied out to end the threat.

Milwaukee added an insurance run in the ninth. Scott Mathieson, who pitched a scoreless eighth, stayed on for the ninth. Hart walked and Braun singled to get things started. Jose Contreras came in from the bullpen and got Fielder to fly out. Casey McGehee then singled to right, but Hart was thrown out at home on the play. A run crossed the plate when Lorenzo Cain reached base on first baseman Howard's fielding error.

Axford pitched a perfect home ninth to record his 20th save.

Game Notes

Mathieson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley prior to the game...Fielder became just the second player in franchise history to produce 30-plus homers in four consecutive seasons...Wolf now has 1,503 strikeouts in his career...Kendrick fell to 1-3 over his last four starts...Wolf improved to 2-2 in seven starts against Philadelphia...Milwaukee went 1-5 on its road trip.

(Sports Network) – The Philadelphia Phillies shoot for their sixth straight win and try to complete season sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies, who also swept the Brewers in a three-game set back in May, scored the go-ahead run on Ryan Braun’s throwing error in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday and eked out a 5-4 win.

Trailing, 4-3, in the seventh, the Phillies had the bases loaded with one out. Placido Polanco stepped to the plate and lofted a sacrifice fly to left to deliver the tying run in Carlos Ruiz. Braun’s throw home took a few bounces before rolling past catcher Jonathan Lucroy. That allowed Wilson Valdez to cross the plate for a 5-4 edge.

The bullpen held strong over the final two innings to make a winner of Roy Halladay (17-10), who gave up four runs on seven hits to snap a two-start skid. The right-hander also struck out six and walked two, but allowed a career-high four homers.

“I left some pitches up. Location was obviously an issue at times,” Halladay said. “Fortunately, they were solo homers and we were able to score the two big runs in the seventh inning.”

Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth each hit solo homers for Philadelphia, which remained one game behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East and stayed three games in front of San Francisco for the wild card spot.

The Phillies are 8-1 since being swept at home by Houston in four games Aug. 23-26.

Corey Hart hit a pair of solo homers for the Brewers, who also got a home run apiece from Prince Fielder and Alcides Escobar.

Dave Bush went six innings in the start, giving up three runs on six hits. He also fanned five batters and walked one for Milwaukee, which has dropped five straight contests. Kameron Loe (3-4) was charged with both runs in the seventh to take the loss.

“We had the lead in the seventh inning. We have to find somebody out of this bullpen that’s going to hold it,” Brewers manager Ken Macha said.

Heading to the hill for the Phillies this afternoon will be righty Kyle Kendrick, who is 9-7 with a 4.72 earned run average. Kendrick earned the win on Tuesday in Los Angeles, but allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings.

Kendrick has faced the Brewers twice and is 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA.

Milwaukee will counter with veteran left-hander Randy Wolf, who is winless in his last two starts after a three-start winning streak. Wolf did not get a decision on Monday in Cincinnati, as the Reds reached him for three runs and eight hits in five innings of a 5-4 loss.

He is 10-10 on the year with a 4.76 ERA.

Wolf, who pitched the first eight years of his career in Philadelphia, is 1-2 in six starts against his former team with a 5.79 ERA. He was hammered by the Phils back on May 14 for six runs in five innings.

Philadelphia, which has won seven of the past nine meetings between the two ball clubs, also went 6-0 against the Brewers in 2004.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Ryan Braun’s throwing error in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Phillies to score the go-ahead run, as Philadelphia got past Milwaukee, 5-4, in the second test of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies send Roy Halladay to the mound to face the Brewer’s Dave Bush tonight at Citizen’s Bank Park. Halladay has just a 1.59 ERA at home this season and a strong effort tonight could pull the Phils even in the NL East with a Braves loss.

Dave Bush brings his 4.71 ERA to face a Phillies team that holds the major league’s best record since July 21. Oddly enough though, Halladay lost in his last start against the Brewers while Dave Bush no hit the Phils through 7 innings in his last start against them.

Here is tonight’s lineup.

Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Raul Ibanez, Shane Victorino, Carlos Ruiz, and Doc.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Carlos Ruiz drove in the lone run of the game and Cole Hamels pitched seven strong innings, as the Philadelphia Phillies snuck past the Milwaukee Brewers, 1-0, in the opener of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

Hamels (9-10) gave up just three hits to go with seven strikeouts and three walks to pick up his second straight win. Ryan Madson recorded his fifth save of the year.

The victory moved the Phillies, who have won four in a row and seven of eight, within one game of the NL East-leading Braves, who lost to the Marlins on Friday.

Chris Capuano (2-3) was solid in five frames, allowing one run on four hits to suffer the hard-luck loss. He also fanned four batters and walked two for Milwaukee, which has lost four straight.

After stranding runners on first and second in the first, Philadelphia scored a run in the second. Shane Victorino led off the frame with a fly ball to left-center field and the ball dropped between Lorenzo Cain and Ryan Braun for a double. Victorino moved to third on a Raul Ibanez groundout and crossed the plate on Ruiz’s grounder to short.

The Phillies had a great chance to add to their lead in the fourth. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out. However, Ibanez struck out and Ruiz lined into a double play to keep it a 1-0 game.

Milwaukee didn’t record a hit off Hamels until the fifth. Casey McGehee hit a single up the middle with one out. Hamels, though, got Cain to ground into a double play.

The Brewers put men on first and second with two outs in the sixth, but Corey Hart grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

Milwaukee continued to strand runners on base in the seventh. Braun walked and Prince Fielder singled to put men on first and second with nobody out. Hamels retired the next three batters to keep the Phillies in front.

Jose Contreras tossed a perfect eighth and Madson retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the victory for Philadelphia.

Philadelphia swept a three-game set in Milwaukee back in May…The Phillies started a seven-game homestand on Friday…Philadelphia reinstated outfielder/first baseman Ross Gload from the 15-day disabled list and selected the contract of utilityman Greg Dobbs from Triple-A Lehigh Valley…Hamels improved to 5-5 over 15 home starts this season. He is 4-2 lifetime against the Brewers…Capuano fell to 0-2 in his career against the Phillies.

(Sports Network) - Philadelphia Phillies All-Star second baseman Chase Utley recorded just four runs batted in during August. At the pace Utley's at so far in September, his RBI total for the month will be astronomical.

Utley and the National League Wild Card-leading Phillies are back at home following a successful road trip out West and will open a three-game series versus the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies swept San Diego in three games, took two of three matchups in Los Angeles, then defeated Colorado last night in a make-up game of a previous rainout.

Philadelphia rallied from an early 4-0 deficit and scored nine runs in the top of the seventh inning for a seemingly comfortable 12-7 advantage in Thursday's game. Utley, who drove in a pair of runs in Wednesday's win over the Dodgers, highlighted the seventh-inning deluge with a grand slam. He had already recorded an RBI single earlier in the frame.

Ryan Howard blasted a two-run shot for the Phillies, who have won three in a row and sit two games in front of San Francisco in the Wild Card standings. Utley ended with six RBI at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

"I imagine there are a lot of guys that have driven in a lot of runs here," Utley said on the team's site. "There's a lot of room for hits. The ball carries extremely well here. You put those two together, you're going to have some success."

The Phils also pulled within two games of NL East-leading Atlanta after the Braves were downed by the New York Mets on Thursday. Jayson Werth belted a solo homer in the seventh inning -- Philadelphia's third of the frame -- and went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Colorado, however, responded with three runs in the bottom half of the seventh thanks to an RBI hit from Jonathan Herrera and a two-run single by Dexter Fowler. The Phillies were able to hold the Rockies to a run the rest of the way, though, and closer Brad Lidge notched his 19th save in the ninth.

Joe Blanton started for the Phillies and allowed six runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings for the no-decision. Antonio Bastardo got the win with an inning of relief.

The Phillies will also host Florida for four games on the residency and will try to erase the memories of a four-game sweep at the hands of Houston the last time they played at home. Cole Hamels will take the first crack at doing that when he toes the rubber tonight.

Hamels was 0-3 in his last eight starts despite a surprisingly decent 2.83 earned run average before beating the Padres in a 5-0 win last Sunday. He hurled eight scoreless innings and allowed four hits with six strikeouts and no walks to improve to 8-10 with a 3.31 ERA in 27 starts this season.

Hamels is 4-5 in 14 home starts and defeated Milwaukee on May 16 of this season at Miller Park, where he allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings of a 4-2 triumph. The lefty and 2008 World Series MVP is 3-2 with a 4.23 ERA in seven lifetime starts against the Brewers.

Milwaukee is just trying to play consistent baseball right now and was just swept in three games at Cincinnati. It won all three games against Pittsburgh before coming up empty against the Reds and suffered a 6-1 setback on Wednesday. Chris Narveson pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball for the Brewers, but Todd Coffey absorbed the loss for giving up three runs in a six- run seventh inning.

"I didn't want (Narveson) to pitch the whole game and get a loss," said Milwaukee manager Ken Macha. "He was going to be in there in the seventh inning until he got a baserunner."

Narveson also had a team-best two hits and drove in Milwaukee's only run in the fifth inning.

The Brewers, who have lost seven of 10 games, will pin tonight's pitching duties on Chris Capuano. The left-hander is 2-2 with a 5.06 earned run average in 18 games (3 starts) this season and previously pitched in last Saturday's 8-7 win versus Pittsburgh. He was fortunate the results were in Milwaukee's favor after he gave up six runs and six hits in three innings of relief.

Capuano is 0-1 with a 3.54 ERA in four career appearances, three of which have been starts, against the Phillies.

Philadelphia swept a three-game set in Milwaukee back in May and has won five of the past seven meetings between the two ballclubs.
