Philadelphia Eagles LB Ernie Sims called the $50,000 fine handed down to him by the NFL “outrageous” and says he plans to lodge an appeal.

“I really, really hate the fact that I got fined $50,000,” he said. “I don’t care how much money you make, that’s a ton of money, money I worked hard for my whole life. Just for anybody to take it away from me for something that I do on the field, I just think it’s crazy. But this is the league that I play in and I’ve got to respect that, so I’m just going to go out there and keep playing football.”

Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott was asked whether he had any plans to talk to his players about hitting what the NFL has termed “defenseless receivers”

“We respect everything that comes down from the league obviously. That said, I want our players aggressive. Is there a fine line there between aggressive and not being a smart player? Yes. And we have to make sure we find that line so we don’t hurt the team.”

“As an overall defense from a philosophical standpoint we want to be a aggressive, but you have to be smart. You have to be smart and you have to know how they’re calling things. And that’s a general way to answer your question but that’s how we’ve addressed it with the players, is be aggressive, remain aggressive. But also play within the rules and be smart.”

This time, the Eagles were on the other end of a big fine. LB Ernie Sims was hit with a $50,000 fine for striking Tennessee Titans WR Lavelle Hawkins in the head with his forearm while the player was considered defenseless. The NFL has warned Sims, who is already a “repeat offender,” that next time he could face a suspension.

The fine was issued by NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson, who told Sims that “further offenses will result in an escalation of fines up to and including suspension.”

Sims is the first player to be hit with a big fine since the league started its first crackdown after the Week 6 game where DeSean Jackson was hit in the head by Falcons DB Dunta Robinson.

Honestly, I have no memory of the hit in question. I do remember a play where Sims hit RB Chris Johnson in the head and I wondered whether that might draw a fine, but I really don’t remember a hit on Lavelle Hawkins. ESPN’s Matt Mosley couldn’t recall the hit either.

Andy Reid said when Michael Vick was injured that the he would not lose his starting job, but then again he said the same thing when Kevin Kolb was injured in Week 1. The difference is, this time he meant it. When asked after yesterday’s game who the starting quarterback would be in two weeks when the Eagles face the Colts, Reid’s reply was, “It’s Michael.”

Vick has been making steady progress healing from the rib injury he suffered against Washington in Week 4. This week he was healthy enough to dress for the game, but not quite ready to play. In two weeks, all signs point to Vick being back to full strength. It will be interesting to see how Vick responds after the bye, before his injury many pundits felt he was the leader in the race for league MVP. He really was playing that well. Physically he should be fine, but will he be in the same “groove” he was before the injury where he had seemingly developed into a deadly accurate passer that never turns the ball over?

We can only hope.

Imagine you had not watched the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans today. Would you believe it if I told you that the Eagles actually held a nine point lead in the fourth quarter of this game? A game that they lost by 18 points? It’s all too true… The Titans outscored the Eagles 27-3 in the fourth quarter of this game and turned a two score deficit into a total blowout.

For the Titans, the star was Kenny Britt who set a record for the most receiving yards by an opposing player in Eagles franchise history. He had 225 yards and 3 TDs in a total domination of the pair of CB Ellis Hobbs and rookie S Nate Allen.

It would be pointless to list all of the Eagles that were poor today. In every way, this was the definition of a “team loss.” There’s probably not one guy outside of David Akers, who you can really say played well.

As I said, there’s a lot of blame to go around here, but let’s look at the easy stuff that always loses you games. The Eagles had four turnovers today, which the Titans scored 20 points off. They forced two turnovers, but scored zero off those. Finally, they had ten penalties for 100 yards. You can’t do that and win games. It’s that simple.

With the clock not even working, the Eagles got the ball back with 1:10 remaining in the first half. With four second remaining, David Akers kicked a 46 yard FG to put the Birds up 13-7 at the half.

It’s been a fairly erratic game on both sides of the ball as both teams have hurt themselves with bad penalties and turnovers. Kevin Kolb has one pick, while Kerry Collins has a pick and fumble. Both of the Titans turnovers were forced by Quintin Mikell. Both teams were penalized four times in the first half.

Kevin Kolb is 15/26 for 145 yards with a TD and an INT in the first half. Kolb and the Eagles offense are 7 for 10 on third down.

The Eagles defense has really showed up today holding the Titans to just 87 total yards. They’ve sacked Kerry Collins three times and have held him to just 62 yards passing. Chris Johnson had a good first half with 44 rushing yards, but hasn’t really hurt the Eagles yet, so they have to considered themselves as winning that matchup so far.

This drive was all about rookie WR Riley Cooper. The Eagles tried a gadget play where where they began in the Wildcat and ended up tossing the ball back to Kevin Kolb who simply lobbed up a free pass to anyone that wanted it.

As Titans’ safety Chris Hope stood waiting for the ball to come to him, rookie WR Riley Cooper leapt in front him to make a fantastic 37 yard catch to give the Eagles first and goal. Two plays later Cooper ended up matched up with a LB and caught a 5 yard TD pass over the middle to put the Eagles up 10-7.

Funny enough, Cooper was also a baseball player in high school and was a draft pick of both the Philadelphia Phillies and the World Series bound Texas Rangers.

This was a bad few minutes for the Eagles. It started out well with Quintin Mikell getting a strip sack of Kerry Collins which was recovered by Juqua Parker. On what seemed like the very next play Kevin Kolb was hit as he threw and ended up tossing up a duck which was picked off by Michael Griffin and returned into Eagles territory.

The Eagles defense forced a 3rd down and appeared to have stopped the Titans, but Juqua Parker was flagged for a personal foul after he grabbed Kerry Collins as he was throwing and threw him to the ground afterward. The Titans capitalized when Collins threw a TD strike to WR Kenny Britt a few plays later.

It’s 7-3 Titans in the second quarter.

The Eagles capped a 14 play, 45 yard drive with a 25 yard David Akers FG. The Eagles moved the ball well, as they have all day, with Kevin Kolb going 5/6 on the drive. But they bogged down in the red zone against the league’s best red zone defense.

Backup LT King Dunlap was blown up by former Eagle Jason Babin on third down and goal.
