Missed the last 10 shots, outscored 24-14 in the 4th quarter. Despite the great first half, the Sixers could not finish. This is what bad teams do. 2 game winning streak snapped.

5-14 record. Check Liberty Ballers for the full recap.

The Sixers hot shooting started to falter a bit, dropping to just over 50%, and the Hawks road a late run to cut the lead to 5 points. Marvin Williams leads the way for Atlanta with 18, although he’s only got one rebound. Elton Brand and Spencer Hawes continue to dominate the defensive glass, keeping Zaza Pachulia and Al Horford at bay.

Missing shots will happen, but when they settle for outside shots, it’s going to happen more often. They’ve only gotten to the line 13 times so far tonight, and only 3 times combined from Iguodala, Brand, and Holiday. That’s not enough. The offense isn’t moving the ball around enough, people are standing still and setting lackadaisical picks. Keep moving, get the Hawks off-balance and push the ball after outlet passes. With a strong quarter, the Sixers could keep the winning streak alive.

I’m just hoping Tony Battie doesn’t play more than 3 minutes this quarter.

In this, the 19th game of the season, the Sixers have put together their best half of basketball thus far in 2010. Count with me on your fingers.

1. Shooting…..56.8% FG – Check
2. Rebounding….87.5% DReb% – Check
3. Defending…..46 points for Hawks – Check
4. Stay out of foul trouble….No starters with more than 1 foul – Check
5. Bench play…..24 bench points – Check

The Sixers biggest lead of the half was 18, led by 9 first quarter points from Spencer Hawes and 8 second quarter points from Marreese Speights. Elton Brand has been commanding the glass, snagging 8 boards in the first half. Jrue Holiday, Louis Williams, and Andre Iguodala have been sharing nicely, passing the ball well for 13 assists between them.

Evan Turner showed me something in the second quarter too, being more assertive on the offensive end starting with a fast break dunk on an Iguodala pass. His demotion could spur him to action and get him back in the starting lineup sooner rather than later.

The Hawks ended the half on a 14-4 run when they starting hitting their open shots, but the Sixers still take an 8-point lead into the locker room on the road. Watch out for a third quarter collapse, but Philly is looking like a good bet for beating the 6-point spread and notching their third straight win.

Doug Collins made the move to bench rookie Evan Turner, who has been anything but valuable the past 5 games, giving the starting gig to Jodie Meeks. The Kentucky product responded early, knocking down a three and attacking the basket for 5 first-quarter points. The real story of the first quarter was Spencer Hawes, the severely underperforming center we got in the Dalembert deal. He scored 9 points on 5 shots, snagged 5 rebounds and dished out 3 assists. He was the beneficiary of a few dump passes by Andre Iguodala as well as some inside jump shots over smaller defender Marvin Williams. Easily his best quarter as a Sixer.

The defense was swarming at times and lackadaisical at others. Josh Smith hit a few of his fadeaways but Al Horford missed a bunch of shots he’d normally hit. If Elton Brand (7 rebounds already) and the other Sixers bigs can’t cover Atlanta’s moneymakers, the game will turn the other way quickly. Right now, we’re outshooting them 55% to 37%.

(Sports Network) - An Atlanta Hawks team minus leading scorer Joe Johnson shoots for its fifth straight win tonight when they entertain the Philadelphia 76ers.

Johnson, a four-time All-Star with averages of 17.1 points, 5.2 assists and 4.1 rebounds in 18 games this season, had successful surgery on his right elbow on Thursday and is expected to miss anywhere from 4-to-6 weeks.

His absence didn't stop the Hawks from winning their fourth straight on Wednesday when Mike Bibby made three of his four three-pointers in the fourth quarter, as Atlanta held off the Memphis Grizzlies, 112-109, at Philips Arena.

Bibby finished with 15 points and six assists for the Hawks, who found out before the game that Johnson would be sidelined up to six weeks.

"I think we have enough off the bench," Atlanta head coach Larry Drew said. "We have guys that are capable. We just have to get some guys to step up a little bit more."

Al Horford added 20 points, six rebounds and six assists for Atlanta against Memphis. Jamal Crawford and Josh Powell each chipped in with 16 points, while Marvin Williams tallied 15 points for the victors.

The Sixers, meanwhile, have shown a little life recently, winning their second consecutive contest on Tuesday when Elton Brand scored 18 points and Philadelphia stepped up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter to down Portland, 88-79, at the Wells Fargo Center.

Jrue Holiday donated 11 points as did Andres Nocioni off the bench for the 76ers, who have won consecutive games for the first time since March 24-26, 2010. Spencer Hawes chipped in 10 points in the victory.

"It was just a great win," said 76ers head coach Doug Collins. "I am so pleased with how our guys are playing defense."

The Hawks' current four-game run is their longest since opening the season with six straight victories, one of which was a 104-101 victory at Philadelphia on Oct. 29.

"They have so much offense," Collins said of the Hawks to the Sixers' official website. "They have a lot of fire power. They are very athletic."
