Cole Hamels may have come into the year as the fourth starter on paper, but so far this season he's made a strong argument that he may very well be the top arm on the staff. Hamels threw eight innings of shutout ball with no walks as the Phillies took the rubber game of their series with the LA Dodgers. Hamels improved to 6-0 all time (playoffs and regular season) against LA. It was the Phillies MLB leading 8th shutout of the season and tied Hamels for the MLB in wins with 8.

Ryan Howard broke the Phillies season high six game home run-less streak with a blast in the sixth inning. Prior to that, Howard had been 0-13 lifetime against Dodgers’ starter Hiroki Kuroda. The only other run the Phils managed came in the seventh when Shane Victorino tripled and was knocked in by Domonic Brown.

Tonight always looked like it was going to be a low scoring affair with Hamels and Kuroda on the mound, both of whom had dominated the opposing team in their careers. However, the Phillies once again fielded a depleted lineup as Jimmy Rollins missed another game and Chase Utley was given the night off after having payed five straight games. Amazingly, Cole Hamels came into this game with a higher batting averaging than everyone on the Phillies lineup save Placido Polanco.

The Phillies will start a four game series against the Cubs tomorrow night with Kyle Kendrick slated to get the start.

Cole Hamels takes the hill tonight for the rubber game of the Phillies series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The SoCal born Hamels has owned the Dodgers with a career 1.50 ERA. He’s also beat the Dodgers three times in the playoffs.

However… Hamels will be facing Hiroki Kuroda, who in turn, has owned the Phillies. In four career starts against them, Kuroda is 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA. Kuroda has lost three straight however and has posted a 7.36 ERA over that span.

Meanwhile, Hamels has been rolling in his last four starts , going 3-0 with a 2.17 ERA. The only game he did not win was over the weekend when he allowed only one run over eight innings to the PIrates, but didn’t get a decision.

At the plate, the Phillies will be looking to solve their recent power outage. They haven’t hit a home run in six games, which is their longest streak of the season. The Phils took four of six from the Dodgers last year, including two of three at Citizens Bank Park.

(Sports Network) – Cliff Lee was able to frustrate the Dodgers in last night’s opener of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Roy Oswalt will try to deploy a similar tactic tonight and avoid a fourth straight losing decision as he takes the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies, who seek a fourth straight victory over Los Angeles.

Oswalt, who has pitched to a 1.96 earned run average over his last four starts, was last in action on Wednesday in Washington and suffered a 2-1 loss. The 33-year-old righty allowed both runs on six hits and two walks over five innings and 79 pitches, exiting early after being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and the Phils needing some offense.

“That’s their decision,” Oswalt told the Phillies’ official website. “[Charlie Manuel’s] the manager of the team. I don’t really question too much of that. We’ll see how it goes next time.”

Oswalt is now 3-3 with a 2.70 ERA in nine starts this season and is an excellent 8-3 with a 2.84 ERA in his career when facing the Dodgers.

He’ll try to keep Los Angeles’ offense in check one night after Lee struck out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings to guide Philadelphia to a 3-1 victory. Lee, who gave up six runs over 5 1/3 innings in a loss in his previous outing, yielded seven hits and one walk while recording his sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season and 15th of his career.

“I’m not trying to strike guys out,” said Lee, who leads the majors with 100 strikeouts on the season. “I’m trying to get outs as quickly as possible.”

Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard hit RBI singles in the third inning for the Phillies, who picked up a second straight victory in the opener of a season- long 11-game homestand and lead both the Marlins and Braves by four games for first place in the National League East.

Howard, third in the NL with 47 RBI, has driven in five runs over his past three games, while Los Angeles’ Matt Kemp, who has 48 RBI on the season, went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts after notching 13 RBI over his previous six games. That included eight runs driven in over his past two games.

With Kemp held in check, Los Angeles didn’t get on the board Monday night until a pinch-hitting Andre Ethier plated a run in the ninth inning with a fielder’s choice grounder. It was such an impeding night for the Dodgers’ offense that Casey Blake was ejected in the sixth inning after arguing a called third strike.

“We weren’t able to get that hit to break through,” said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.

Los Angeles wasted a solid outing from Ted Lilly, who gave up two runs over six innings as his club saw a modest two-game win streak come to an end. The Dodgers have now split the first four games of a 10-game road trip.

With Jon Garland out due to right shoulder inflammation, 22-year-old Rubby De La Rosa will make the first start of his major league career for the Dodgers this evening.

De La Rosa, Los Angeles’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year a season ago, is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three relief outings since making his MLB debut on May 24 after being recalled from Double A. The right-hander has allowed a run over five innings, striking out five, and was holding opponents to a .199 batting average in 40 innings with Double-A Chattanooga prior to his recall.

The Phillies took four of six from the Dodgers a season ago.

Earlier today Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr updated Jimmy Rollins’ injury status and said that he had sustained a bad bruise to his knee and that there was a chance he could go on the DL.

“He bruised the patella pretty well and another bone,” Amaro said. “He got himself pretty good. He has a fairly deep bruise on the patella.”

This afternoon, Jimmy Rollins himself couldn’t disagree more.

“If I went on the DL, it would be because they made a bad decision,” Rollins said. “You can write that.”

A pretty strong statement from J-Roll. Obviously the MRI revealed nothing broken, so when he can play again would seem to rest solely on how he feels. Clearly he doesn’t feel two weeks away.

Cliff Lee struck out ten batters over seven innings of shutout ball as the Phillies took the opener of their series with the Dodgers 2-1. The Phils’ first two runs came in the third inning when Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard both hit RBI singles.

They would add an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th when Dodger killer Carlos Ruiz doubled in Chase Utley. The Phils won despite being outhit on the night 9-6.

The Dodgers got their lone run in the ninth off Ryan Madson as the Phils closer got himself into quick trouble. He allowed a leadoff double to Juan Uribe, then a single to James Loney to put runners on the corners with none out. Andre Either hit into a fielders’ choice, scoring Uribe. However, Madson would recover and struck out Rod Barajas and Dioner Navarro to end the threat and earn his 13th save.

Roy Oswalt takes on Rubby De La Rosa tomorrow night.

The Dodgers are the midst of a 10 game road trip, but have played well as of late, with three straight series wins. To take the series from the Phils this week, they’ll need to beat two of Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt.

Lee is up first against Dodgers’ lefty Ted Lilly. Lilly is 1-4 lifetime against the Phils with a 5.91, which inflates to 7.16 in his three career starts at the Bank. Cliff Lee only has one career start against the Dodgers, throwing 7+ innings of one run ball in a game he did not earn a decision.

Domonic Brown will get the start in right field against a lefty for the first time this season. Charlie Manuel opted to give Raul Ibanez the day off, so Ben Francisco will start in left. Jimmy Rollins is still sore from fouling a ball off his leg over the weekend, so Wilson Valdez will get another start at SS.

Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins took to twitter today to update the status of the leg he injured over the weekend when he fouled a ball off it in the first inning of Saturday night's game. J-Roll says that his MRI and X-Rays were negative and that he's starting to feel better.
