Cliff Lee turned in a vintage performance this afternoon with a complete game, 2-hit shutout as the Phillies completed their first four game sweep of the Marlins in Philadelphia since 2001 Lee has now allowed just one earned run in his last 24 innings pitched at Citizens Bank Park. Today's victory marks the Phillies MLB best 44th win and drops the Marlins into last place in the NL East, 11.5 games back of the Phillies.

Lee did his work on the mound and at the plate this afternoon, giving himself all the run support he would need with a 2-out double in the bottom of the fourth that score Michael Martinez. Ryan Howard’s 15th home run of the year provided the second run and Jimmy Rollins’ 6th inning double that score Domonic Brown wrapped up the scoring for the afternoon.

With the win, the Phillies extended their season high winning streak to seven games and stretch their lead in the NL East to 5.5 games. It’s a getaway day for the Phils, who now head across the country for a three game weekend series with the Seattle Mariners. Roy is scheduled to pitch the first game against rookie of the year contender Michael Pineda.

It’s alive…it’s alive…the Phillies’ offense, that is. The team has scored at least five runs in all but one of its last six games, with days that have included eight and nine-run performances this week, and the Phils will look to maintain that success as they face off with Florida in their series finale vs. the Marlins this afternoon.

Cliff Lee (6-5, 3.41 ERA) has been excellent as of late and will be on the hill for Philadelphia to close out the series, which the Phillies have already wrapped up with three consecutive victories. In his last outing, Lee went eight innings and allowed just one run against the Cubs, and after beginning the season with a bit of disappointing inconsistency, he’s seemingly stepped up and is on pace with the rest of the heralded pitching rotation. It should be noted he’s won his last four starts at Citizens Bank Park, striking out 35 batters in that span.

On the mound for the Marlins is Javier Vasquez (3-6, 7.09 ERA), who came over from the Yankees this past offseason and has really struggled in recent appearances. Over his last two games as Florida’s starting pitcher, he’s allowed 13 runs in a little over seven innings, and that should be promising news for the Phillies’ exploding offense, which has been led by the likes of just about everyone in recent games, from Jimmy Rollins to Chase Utley to Carlos Ruiz and even Wilson Valdez.

With a win over the Marlins to close out the series, the Phillies will push their division rivals 11.5 games back in the NL East race and pad their own regular season record, which is still the best in Major League Baseball.

Shane Victorino’s 2 out 2-run single tied the game in the bottom of the ninth and Carlos Ruiz ended it in the 10th as the Phillies came from behind to beat the Marlins, sweep the doubleheader and win their season high 6th straight.

Roy Halladay started the game and turned in a so-so effort by his standards giving up four runs over seven innings with 8 Ks. Meanwhile, the Phils managed just two runs off Florida starter Anibal Sanchez and took a 4-2 deficit into the bottom of the ninth. That’s where it got fun.

Domonic Brown led off the inning and grounded out. Carlos Ruiz followed that with a single. Ross Gload then came on to hit for Michael Stutes and hit a single of his own to put runners on first and second. Michael Martinez came on to run for Gload and the runners moved up on Jimmy Rollins’ sacrifice. With runners on second and third, Shane Victorino stepped to the plate and grounded a ball just past a diving Jose Lopez to score both Ruiz and Michael Martinez and tie the game at four. It was Leo Nunez’s third blown save of the year.

Shane Victorino would steal second and then take third on a throwing error with Chase Utley at the plate, however Utley would fly out to end the threat. It would only take one more inning though as Ryan Howard would be hit by a pitch in the 10th and four batters later, none other than Carlos Ruiz would knock him home for the game winner.

With Mets currently leading the Braves, the Phillies could open up 5 game in the lead in the NL East. Meanwhile, the Marlins drop into a last place tie in the division with the Nationals, 10.5 games back of the Phils. They’ve now lost six straight.

The Marlins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but that was the last run they would score as the Phillies pounded starter Elih Villanueva in his major league debut. All eight Phillies runs came in the first three innings and all were charged to Villanueva, who gave up five hits and five walks in his three innings of work.

The game was busted open with a 6-run third inning that saw both a Wilson Valdez 3-run triple and a Jimmy Rollins 3-run homer. Valdez very nearly had an in the park grand slam and Rollins had 4 RBI on the day.

As it turned out though, the Phillies really didn’t all the runs with Kyle Kendrick on the hill, who was fantastic over seven innings. He gave up just five hits, one run and struck out five. Plus, he needed only 88 pitches to get through seven innings.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Phillies, who will send Roy Halladay to the mound tonight looking to extend the winning streak to a season high six games and to claim his MLB leading 10th win.

The Phillies will look to build on their four game winning streak today as they host the Marlins in a day night doubleheader at Citizens’ Bank Park. In game one, Kyle Kendrick will face off with Elih Villanueva, making his major league debut. Tonight, Roy Hallladay takes on Anibal Sanchez.

Kendrick’s last start was cut short by rain after three scoreless innings. In his previous outing however, he was touched for four runs in five innings against the Pirates. He’s got a 5-2 career record against the Marlins.

This evening, Roy Halladay will look for his MLB leading 10th win as he takes on Anibal Sanchez, who has been one of the lone bright spots for the struggling Marlins. He’s won his past six decisions, however he’s 1-5 with a 7.85 ERA in eight career starts in Philadelphia.

Halladay was a hard luck loser in his last start against the Marlins losing 2-1 after throwing eight strong innings and allowed just one earned run. Lifetime against the Marlins he’s 4-3 with a 2.13 ERA in eight career starts.

Cole Hamels threw seven scoreless innings and rookie Domonic Brown homered twice as the Phillies routed the Marlins 9-1 at Citizens' Bank Park. Hamels was as brilliant as we've come to expect striking out six and giving up just three hits on the night. David Herndon pitched the final two innings to close it out. Hamels grabbed a share of NL lead in wins with 9 and lowered season WHIP to 0.92. He's now 5-0 in his last six starts.

Cole looked to be cruising for a complete game, but was pulled in the 8th after 99 pitches when the training staff looked at him on the mound after he issued a walk to Wes Helms. It was announced after the game that he had some back stiffness, but is not expected to miss any time.

The Phils offense did their damage with the long ball, led by Domonic Brown's two solo shots. Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley all homered as well. Overall, the Phils pounded out 11 hits against the Marlins, 10 of which came off starter Chris Volstad, who was charged with 8 runs.

The loss is just another is what has been a total collapse from the Marlins, who just a little over two weeks ago sat just a game back in the NL East as well just a game or two off the pace for the leagues' best record. Since June began however, they've gone just 1-12 and have now dropped into fourth in the NL East, 8.5 games back of the Phillies.

The Phillies meanwhile have won four straight, are 7-3 over their last 10 and enjoy a 3.5 game cushion in the division. Perhaps the best news however is that the once stagnant offense has now scored 43 runs since June 5th. That's almost fiver per game. The Phils are back to work tomorrow as Kyle Kendrick faces Elih Villanueva.

Cole Hamels, who's been one of the true aces of Philadelphia's pitching rotation this season, will look to contain Hanley Ramirez and the Marlins in the opener of a four-game series vs. Florida this evening. The red-hot southpaw has been one of the Phillies' dominant players on the mound, but has struggled against the division rival Marlins in the past and is expected to match up with the All-Star Ramirez, who's returning from an injury and will try to lead his club to just its third victory since May 29.

The Phillies (40-26) are coming off three consecutive wins over the Cubs and are looking to maintain the offensive success they've generally been able to produce in recent games after taking Monday off. It should be noted that first baseman Ryan Howard has a tendency to hit the ball well against Chris Volstad, and that's exactly who the Phils will be facing tonight at Citizens Bank Park. The Marlins right-hander, who is 6-4 with a 2.88 ERA on the year, has given up six home runs to Howard in just 23 at-bats, along with five other hits.

Hamels will be looking for his ninth win of the season tonight, but has had trouble containing the Marlins' lineup. For his career, the lefty is 4-7 against Florida, but has been impressive in 2011; he's won eight contests thus far and his most recent outing included eight shutout innings against the Dodgers.
