Vance Worley and David Herndon combined for six innings of 2-hit, one run ball and John Mayberry Jr. hit a 2-run homer as the Phillies beat the Diamondbacks 4-1, becoming the first team in the majors to 80 wins.

Worley got the start and was looking strong until a nearly two and half hour rain delay ended his night. However, with regular long reliever Kyle Kendrick unavailable because he’s scheduled to start for Cole Hamels this weekend, the Phillies called on David Herndon to take the hill when the rains stopped. He picked up the win after three strong innings in which he struck out four and allowed just one hit.

Mayberry smacked what would turn out to to be the game winning homer in the third when he bounced a pitch off the left field pole to put the Phils up 3-1. Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez each had a pair of hits and scored a run.

The win puts the Phillies a season high 39 games over .500. They are currently one game off the pace for the best record in franchise history, set in 1977.

The great thing about following this year’s Philadelphia Phillies team is that whenever you have a real tough loss like last night, you usually have one of Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay or Cole Hamels going the next day. There’s never carry over or potential for long losing streaks. Tonight was further proof of that.

Jimmy Rollins led off the game with his 37th career leadoff homer, moving him into 5th all time in that category. But over the next six innings, the two teams played to standstill. Cliff Lee was, of course, very good throwing seven innings of two-run, three hit ball, striking out seven. His 18 inning scoreless streak was broken in the second by a two run Paul Goldschmidt homer, but otherwise he cruised.

Joe Saunders cruised as well for the first six innings, but as the British would say, that’s when things went pear shaped. The Phillies plated seven runs over the 7th and 8th innings to pull away and make what was a very close contest into a rout. Wilson Valdez, Ben Francisco, John Mayberry (who had three hits), Jimmy Rollins, Brian Schneider and Shane Victorino all had RBIs in those innings to help the Phils pull away.

In fact, Chase Utley was the only Phillies starter to not have a hit tonight. The Phils send Vance Worley to the hill tomorrow for the rubber match, against the D’Backs top starter, Ian Kennedy.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Lyle Overbay doubled in two runs in the top of the ninth to lift the Diamondbacks over Roy Halladay and the Phillies, 3-2, in the first of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.

Justin Upton and Miguel Montero singled before Overbay doubled off Halladay to right-center.

Chase Utley’s relay throw home was on-target but Collin Cowgill, who replaced Montero on the bases, dove over catcher Carlos Ruiz’s left leg and touched the plate just before Ruiz was able to apply the tag.

“[Halladay] made a mistake in my last at-bat,” Overbay said. “You know you’re going to get a pitch to hit and you have to take advantage of it.”

Bryan Shaw (1-0) earned his first career win after giving up one hit in a scoreless eighth, and J.J. Putz picked up his 30th save of the season after overcoming a leadoff walk in the ninth.

Halladay (15-5) was stellar despite giving up the lead in the ninth, fanning 14 in nine innings. But in allowing three runs on eight hits, he suffered his first home loss since falling to the Brewers on April 19. It was also the first time Halladay blew a ninth-inning lead since 2007.

“There was no discussion (to take Halladay out),” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “It was his game.”

The Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the fifth following Shane Victorino’s two-run blast. Jimmy Rollins singled to right before Victorino blasted the 1-1 offering over the right-field wall.

In the seventh Halladay doubled and moved to third when Rollins grounded out to pitcher Josh Collmenter. But Collmenter was able to get Shane Victorino to pop up before Joe Patterson came in to strike out Chase Utley, stranding Halladay on third.

Arizona struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Chris Young singled, stole second and then scored when Overbay singled to right.

The Phillies blew an opportunity to score in the third. Halladay singled and Utley doubled with two outs before Howard walked to load the bases. But Collmenter was able to get Pence to chase a 3-2 pitch out of the zone to record the strikeout after an epic 11-pitch at bat.

Collmenter gave up two runs on eight hits and fanned eight in 6 2/3 innings.

Upton extended his hitting-streak to seven games… Arizona has 35 comeback wins this season…Prior to the game the Phillies held a ceremony to unveil a statue memorializing long-time broadcaster Harry Kalas…The Phillies lost for just the second time this season when leading after eight innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies resume business this evening after a two day break as they welcome the NL West leading Arizona Diamondbacks to town for a three game set.

The Philadelphia Phillies resume business this evening after a two day break as they welcome the NL West leading Arizona Diamondbacks to town for a three game set. The Diamondbacks have ridden a six game winning streak to the top of the NL West, although were also no doubt aided by the Phillies taking three of four from the SF Giants last week.

The D'Backs are coming off a three game sweep of the Mets over the weekend, while the Phillies split a pair of game with the Nationals and had the rubber game rained out. That rainout means Roy Halladay will start this evening and Cliff Lee will go tomorrow. Halladay, who has won his last four starts and has not lost at Citizens Bank Park since mid-April, will go for his NL leading 16th win against rookie Josh Collmenter. Collmenter has only pitched one inning of relief against the Phils while Halladay is 3-0 with a 2.61 ERA in his career against Arizona.

The Phillies have dominated the NL West going 21-9 this year. However, the D'Backs did take two of three from the Phils back in late April. Overall, the Phillies have won 13 of their last 15.
