Michael Vick sat down with the local national media yesterday to discuss the six-year, $100 million (well, not quite) commitment made to him by the Eagles and to reflect on his past and future in football. Despite the personal and professional transformation made by Vick over the past two years, people are perhaps understandably still skeptical about his ability to continue working hard and growing as a person and a player. But Vick says that getting this contract and the financial security it brings won't affect his work ethic or make him complacent.

"Absolutely not. I think if anything it will make me want to work harder, and just to continue to show that I'm worthy of everything that I've gotten. I think back to when I first got here and the commitment that I made to myself and to Andy that I'm going to change. I've always been a guy that's worked hard, and I see the progress that's been made in my career and why I've stopped. It's something that drives and motivates you, and I'm motivated now because I play with such great teammates and we have the opportunity to do something special. We all know how hard it is to reach certain levels, but through teamwork you make dream work. That's what we've been able to do."

This is actually the second $100+ million deal Vick has signed, making him the only player in the NFL history to do that. However, he obviously squandered that first deal and admitted that two years ago when he left prison, he never thought this day would come again

"No, to be honest I never thought this day would come. Again, in my career I just, like I said I wanted to play a game just to prove myself; to this magnitude I didn't think it would happen this way, but that goes to show how much I know. You know, just keep pressing forward and keep believing. I think faith is something that we all have to have at the end of the day. And I'm living proof that if you believe in yourself and commit yourself to doing certain things, you can do them. And it's all mental, it's all mental. Everything I've been through over the last three or four years of my life has just been a challenge mentally to see how I was going to respond to it, that's how I feel. And I responded in the right way with the help of a lot of people because I couldn't have done it by myself."

Vick says that the ultimate goal is still to bring a Superbowl back to Philadelphia.

"Absolutely, I mean, you play this game to better your craft, to better yourself as a football player. Like I said, that one common goal is to win the Super Bowl, and that's why we play. As a competitor, I don't feel like my career would be complete without that. That's the reason I've worked so hard. I have to give a lot of credit to Andy because everyday he's coached me up. There's always something new. I know I'll never get to a point where I know it all, but he can certainly help me get there 90-percent of the way. That's why I'm appreciative of where I'm at, sitting right here before you, and having the chance to be with this team for another six years."

The headline yesterday was eye popping. Michael Vick signed a brand new six year, $100 million contract with the Eagles. However, as in almost all NFL contracts, the truth is not really in that final number. As Pro Football Talk discovered, the reality of Vick’s contract is not as gaudy as the $100 million figure suggests. In fact, they put the true value of the contract at five years and $80 million.

The key clause in the contract is that the sixth year voids if Vick takes 35% of the snaps in any given year of the deal. Meaning, it’s all but guaranteed that the 6th year won’t happen. That shaves off about $20 million from the overall value of the deal.

It also includes $35.5 million in guarantees, which is less than the initially reported $40 million. If you look at how the guarantees are spread, you could also say that the deal could only be worth 3-years and $48 million should the Eagles choose to get out early.

There are some good incentives for Vick however, should the Eagles win the Superbowl this year or next, he gets a $3 million bonus. Plus, if the team keeps him into the 4th and 5th year of the deal, he’ll stand to make another $32 million in base salary. Here’s the year by year breakdown of the payout. These are not cap hits mind you, just what he’ll be paid. The cap hit will be lower.

2011 – $20 million
2012 – $12.5 million
2013 – $15.5 million
2014 – $15.5 million
2015 – $16.5 million

Michael Vick struck it rich on Monday night, signing a contract extension worth $100 million over six years, with nearly $40 million in guaranteed money. Was the deal the right move for the Eagles, however?

Less than a year ago, Michael Vick was seen as nothing more than a situational backup and occasional Wildcat quarterback. Still re-acclimating himself to the NFL after an infamous two-year absence due to a prison sentence for dogfighting, he was expected to see a slight increase in playing time in 2010, but certainly not more than, say, Kevin Kolb, who was hyped up as the successor of Donovan McNabb on offense. With a little over a week to go until the '11 season kicks off, however, it's Vick that's raking in the big bucks as the Eagles' franchise player--the four-time Pro-Bowler inked a six-year, $100 million extension on Monday night. Was the new deal the right move for the Eagles, however?

My immediate answer to that question--last night, and just as much today--is yes, and primarily because its essentially the only option for the Eagles. Right now, Michael Vick is the face of the team, and there were expressions of optimism from both the quarterback and the front office that a new deal would ultimately be reached. That deal was agreed upon on Monday, lucrative salary totals and all. On track to make nearly $40 million in guaranteed money, Vick's transformation from troubled Falcons washout to elite member of the league has been completed. And when considering various factors, there's little reason to question the Eagles' decision.

One could have been led to believe DeSean Jackson would be the first play-making Eagle to land a new deal, especially after the wideout's holdout in Training Camp and long-evident desire for a big-money contract. And while the general consensus is that Jackson will eventually wind up with a renegotiated deal, the team evidently felt it necessary to lock up Vick first. At 31 years old, a six-year extension doesn't exactly sound like the best idea from the team's standpoint, but Vick's case is a bit different from that of a normal quarterback. Sure, he plays with a recklessness and takes more hits than he should at times, but that's beside the point. If you consider Vick wasn't absorbing any NFL tackles or, for that matter, wearing his body down in any other way from 2007-2008, it's hard to argue that he could very well have a number of years of high-level football left in the tank.

Did the Eagles hand Vick a huge contract after just one impressive season? Perhaps, but that's the way things work in the league these days. Any common-sense fan or analyst knows that many organizations take a "what have you done for me lately?" approach to managing a roster, and Vick has certainly done some respectable things for the Eagles as of late. Teams did seem to slow him down toward the end of the 2010 campaign, but he still fought an uphill battle, working his way into the lineup and taking hold of the club en route to an NFC East title. In addition, this offseason is Vick's first with the Eagles as a full-time starter, so it's almost as though he's yet to divulge the landscape of possibilities in an already potent and Super Bowl-aspiring offense.

Take one gander around the league and some of the other recent contracts for top-tier quarterbacks. Peyton Manning just reeled in $90 million over five years. Ben Roethlisberger inked an eight-year agreement worth over $100 a few years ago. Eli Manning even signed a six-year extension last year that was worth nearly $98 million. If the Eagles believe Michael Vick is an elite passer and worthy of sticking around as the team's long-term starter (and they do), then it's not unreasonable that they've rewarded him for both his superb efforts last year, his improvements as a person off the field, and also as an incentive for garnering even more success in the future.

Michael Vick agreed to a new six year, $100 deal with the Philadelphia Eagles today and some of the terms of the deal are finally starting to leak out. It was initially reported that the deal included $40 million in guarnateed money, however Jason LaCanfora is reporting that the guaranteed money is only $36 million. While that does probably give the Eagles some flexibility later in the deal, but it’s still a massive deal and quite a big reward for the pro bowler.

The $36 million in guarantees works out to be right around two years of the average $16.7M per year average value of the deal. LaCanfora also says that much like the Tom Brady and Peyton Manning extensions, the deal essentially becomes a series of one year deals when the guaranteed money runs out after the first few years of the deal.

La Canfora also says that the deal is not particularly backloaded. Meaning there isn’t a final year of the deal that’s worth $20 million that he has no chance of ever seeing just to inflate the final number. That means that if he plays for a high level for the next six seasons, he’ll have every chance to earn the full $100 million of this deal.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced today that they've signed QB Michael Vick to a new six year $100 million deal, making it official that Vick is their QB of the present and future.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced today that they've signed QB Michael Vick to a new six year $100 million deal, making it official that Vick is their QB of the present and future. Vick was slated to play under the franchise tag this year which meant he was going to count $16.2 million against the cap. That figure has been lowered to $14.4 mil under the new deal. The contract also includes $40 million in guarantees.

"I'm very happy we were able to reach an agreement with Michael on this long-term contract," said Andy Reid. "It's a product of all the hard work Michael has done to better himself over the last couple of years, both on and off the field. I'm very proud that he has been able to achieve success again in this league, but he'll be the first one to tell you that there is a lot of work yet to be done by him and this team as a whole. And there's no doubt in my mind that he will continue on that path. I give a lot of credit to Joe Banner and Joel Segal for getting this deal done."

It would appear that all the of the money problems that Vick was still dealing with in the wake of his bankruptcy are pretty much gone now... Vick's 6 year $100 million deal is comparable to the five year, $90 million deal Peyton Manning signed earlier this offseason. Manning is a little over four years older than Vick his deal averages more per year, but clearly it would seem that the Manning deal set the market for elite QBs.

The move means the Eagles are truly all in on Vick as their QB going forward. Not only did they trade Kevin Kolb, who would have been their safety net as a QB of the future, but now with this deal they've locked themselves in financially to #7. There's certainly a chance that there is some funny money backloaded at the end of the deal to inflate the final number a bit, but with $40 million in guarantees, the team is clearly locked into Vick for the long term and vice versa.
