The initial diagnosis of Michael Vick’s injury was a fractured right hand. However, a CT scan today revealed that there was in fact no break and that the QB had only sustained a contusion to the hand. Andy Reid explained what led to the faulty diagnosis.

“Today, he had a scan and it showed there was no break,” Reid said. “It was a blood vessel sitting above the bone. That happens at times with X-rays. The blood vessel makes it look like it was a fracture. There is still a bunch of swelling. It is sensitive to the touch. The positive is there is not a fracture there.”

While the news that there is no break is certainly very positive for the next several weeks as the recovery time will certainly be shorter for a contusion, but we also can’t downplay what a contusion means. There’s significant swelling and pain which at this point make it very likely that he would struggle to grip a ball with his right hand. While that isn’t his throwing hand, he still has to take snaps with it and secure the ball in case of a hit as well. If he can’t do those things, obviously he can’t play QB.

So, now it’s all down to how the hand responds and how quickly the swelling goes down. Whether or not he plays next week against San Francisco is entirely dependent on that. However, the good news is that since the hand is not broken, this will be a short term injury at best. That’s contrary to the initial reports that he could be out for up to a month.

The Giants came into a Philadelphia riding a six game losing streak against the Eagles. They left with a 29-16 loss and the Eagles in shambles. Michael Vick did not finish the game for the second straight week, this time falling victim to a broken hand. The injury appeared to happen after Vick was knocked to the ground after a play in the third quarter. He went to the locker room for x-rays, but returned to the game before even missing a snap. In fact, on the next drive he would lead the Eagles down the field for a FG to give them their first lead of the day. However, on the next drive Vick stayed on the bench as Mike Kafka entered the game and proceeded to throw a pick on his first attempt.

There is really only one Eagle deserving of praise this afternoon and that's RB LeSean McCoy. Shady ran all over the G-man to the tune of 128 yards and a TD, but his singular effort was simply not enough as the Eagles were poor in almost every other facet of the game. The coaching decisions were awful, with the worst being the decision to go for it on 4th down from midfield in the 4th quarter. The Eagles failed to convert and the Giants scored the go-ahead TD on the following drive.

The offense outside of McCoy was just all around bad. Michael Vick was once again hit time and time again and frankly didn't look entirely healthy all day. Steve Smith did his old team a solid by gifting the Giants the first turnover of the game when he let a pass bounce right off his hands into those of Aaron Ross. It took at least three points away from the Eagles and led to a Giants TD. Then of course, there was the slew of penalties against the offensive line...

The defense was again very poor any time the team really needed a stop. This has become a bit of a recurring theme. They sacked Eli Manning three times and had some great three and out series... but any time the Eagles really needed a stop, whether it was after a turnover or late in the game, they failed. And when they fail, they do it big. We're not talking about FGs here, we're talking about TDs every single time. It was the exact same story last week.

The Eagles were simply outplayed and outcoached by a team that I think most would agree is not as talented as them. That's the bottom line. It's inexcusable and now we've got serious questions going forward. This defense is officially not good. The offense now has to be a question with Vick hurt.

The Eagles will next welcome the 2-1 49ers to town.

Blockers? Who needs em? Not LeSean McCoy. On a play where he had no business gaining probably anything, Shady juked his way to an 11 yard TD that you will no doubt be seeing on the highlight shows this evening. This is seriously Barry Sanders type stuff.

As you'll see in the video. McCoy takes the ball up the middle and finds nothing, so he bounces it out to the left, then jukes two Giants with a move back inside before turning on the jets to get in the end zone. Really fantastic highlight on an otherwise ugly day for the Eagles.

The Eagles and Giants have traded big quarters as they head into the half at a near standstill at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia went straight down the field on their opening drive, but it was ended when former Giants Steve Smith had a Michael Vick pass bounce off his hands and into the air for Aaron Ross to pick it off. It was clearly not the impression the former Giant was looking to have on his old team.

The Giants responded with a quick drive that ended with a 40 yard TD pass to Brandon Jacobs, who took advantage of blow coverage by Casey Matthews on the play. The Giants struck quick on their next drive as well when Eli Manning found Victor Cruz for a 70 yard TD pass. The play was a comedy of errors for the Eagles defense, which saw Kurt Coleman and Nnamdi Asomugha run into one another, taking themselves out of the play and clearing a path for Cruz to scamper for an easy TD.

However, the Eagles fortunes would start to turn. The Eagles would run 9 times on the ensuing drive to get the ball down to near the goal line, but they would be forced to settle for a FG. On the Giants next possession, they would decide to go for it on 4th and 3 from outside the Eagles 30 yard line. Eli Manning found TE Travis Beckum with what should have been an easy first down, but Beckum fell down short of the first down marker and the Giants turned it over on downs. LeSean McCoy would cap off a long Eagles drive with a dazzling five yard run in which he made no less than five Giants miss.

The Eagles would then force a quick 3-and-out and add another field goal just as time ran out in the half.

14-13 Giants after two quarters.

The Eagles host the New York Giants today at 1pm for their home opener at Lincoln Financial Field. Today's game is tied for the latest Eagles home opener ever, with a game against Dallas on September 25th, 1971. The game will be shown on FOX with Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston and Tony Siragusa doing the call. You can also catch the game on the radio simulcast on 94.1-FM and 610-AM WIP.

Eagles DT Cullen Jenkins, who is currently tied for the team lead in sacks, says today's game will be "huge."

"It's huge, especially with it being the home opener. That's probably what it takes to win right there, starting it off with a win as your home record. It sets the standard for what other teams are going to expect coming in here. It's a lot of motivation and a lot of hype going out there."

The Eagles are going for their seventh straight win over the Giants, with last year's pair of wins both coming via a fourth quarter comeback. Of course the most famous of which is the "Miracle at the New Meadowlands" where the Eagles erased a 21 point deficit in 8 minutes and win the game on a DeSean Jackson TD return with no time left. His TD in that game was the first "walk off" punt return in NFL history and marked his fourth TD of 30+ yards against the Giants.

As for some notable connections between the teams. Eagles WR Steve Smith was drafted by the GIants and played there four years making a pro bowl in 2009. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was a receivers coach for the Eagles from 1984-85 and G Stacey Andrews played in 10 games for the Eagles in 2009.

This is the 159th meeting between these two teams. The Giants hold the overall series advantage at 84-72-4, while the Eagles are 13-11 against the Giants under Andy Reid.

The Eagles have officially listed Michael Vick as questionable for this weekend's home opener against the Giants, but all signs point to hi being ready to play. He has been symptom free after suffering a concussion last week against the Falcons and was recently cleared by an independent neurosurgeon to return to practice. Plus, the QB himself says he's ready to go.

"I feel great and ready to play, nothing feels different. So I feel like I've worked myself back into good condition and playing shape and I'm ready to go." Vick continued, "There's no reason to think that I won't play on Sunday. I think after having two good practices, basically I'll be able to go out there, and I'm very excited about the opportunity to go out and play against the New York Football Giants."

The hit that Vick took which caused the concussion was really kind of a fluke where he ended up smacking helmets with his own guy and he says it's not going to change the way he plays.

"You know, I haven't even thought about getting hit. I play this game to win, not thinking about the consequences of staying in the pocket or running or not or getting hit when I run with the football. So I think you just have to play with confidence and not try to worry about it and put it in the back of your mind and let things play out for itself."

He was also asked whether he thought the Giants would be coming after him with extra blitzes in an attempt to get him out of the game?

"I mean, they want me out of the game because they don't want me in the game. I mean, having to deal with me for 60 minutes, I understand the magnitude of that. So it's fun, it's a game and that's why I'm here. And I play the way I play for a reason and we're going to have fun. I look forward to the challenge, competitively, and we're excited about it over here. I know they've been doing a lot of talking but they're the New York Football Giants."

Plus, Vick says he knows what the Giants are going to do with their blitzing and he plans to be prepared.

"I've improved a lot in picking up the blitz, in seeing the blitz, knowing where to go with the blitz outlets. We know New York's MO, we know what they like to do, and I've watched them on film plenty of times. I watched all the games from last year. I watched the last two games. I watched them in preseason. So I know what they like to do, so it's going to be a great game and I can't wait until Sunday."

The Eagles announced that Michael Vick was cleared by an independent neurosurgeon today and was a full participant in practice. Getting cleared by the independent doctor is the final step in the NFL’s concussion protocol, so at this point it seems all but certain that Michael Vick will get the start this weekend when the Eagles host the Giants in their home opener.

Head coach Andy Reid already said earlier this week that if Vick was cleared to play, then he would be playing. So it doesn’t take much connecting of the dots to assume that Michael Vick will be playing this weekend.

Vick was listed as a full participant in practice today. Speaking to the media earlier, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said that Vick looked “great” in practice.

“Oh absolutely, yeah. He has a great mentality, he looks great so we’ll see. Like you said, it’s not quite all in his hands, so we’ll see.”
