Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov said prior to tonight’s game against the Capitals that he didn’t know much about Alex Ovechkin’s style on the ice.

He knows now.

Ovechkin scored two goals in Washington’s 5-2 rout over Philadelphia, which took place tonight (Oct. 20, 2011) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Capitals remained perfect in "The City of Brotherly Love," improving to 6-0 while handing the Flyers (4-1-1) their first loss of the season.

Washington took a 2-1 lead in the first period but the Philadelphia defense was able to keep it scoreless throughout the second frame.

Unfortunately, so did the offense.

Flyers center Sean Couturier flicked one in with 15 seconds left in the game, but already down by four, it was too little, too late.

It was a busy first period for the Washington Capitals, who jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the opening period against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Not much has changed as we enter the third.

That’s because neither team was able to find the net throughout the second stanza and Washington wasted an opportunity to take a commanding lead on the power play caused by Daniel Briere’s high-sticking on Brooks Laich.

It was a brief two-minute advantage, but one that failed to garner any points.

As it stands, Philadelphia will have to make some noise in the third period if they hope to avoid their first loss of the season. Claude Giroux was able to draw first blood with a ten-foot wristshot (assisted by Wayne Simmonds) but Washington quickly answered with goals by Mathieu Perreault and Alex Ovechkin.

The orange & black have their work cut out for them in the next 20 minutes and defense needs to keep the Caps shut down for them to have a chance.

Stay tuned.

Two of the Eastern Conference's hottest teams face off Thursday night when Alex Ovechkin and the undefeated Washington Capitals visit Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov once attended a barbecue with Alex Ovechkin. The two are friendly. But Bryzgalov does not know much about Ovechkin's style on the ice.

Yet.

Bryzgalov should learn more about Ovechkin Thursday night when the undefeated Washington Capitals visit the Flyers at 7 p.m.

"I never studied him," Bryzgalov said. "I never had much experience to play against him. Only, I guess, two games. This whole [Eastern] conference is new to me."

After a relatively pedestrian season last year, Ovechkin has tallied two goals and an assist in Washington's first five games. The Capitals are 5-0 for the first time in team history, the beneficiaries of balanced scoring and impressive goaltending. Nicklas Backstrom leads the Caps with six points, and Tomas Vokoun is 4-0-0 with a 1.94 GAA and .935 SV%.

The Flyers have also started the season with a bang, accumulating a 4-0-1 record through five games. After Tuesday's 7-2 victory against the Ottawa Senators, the Flyers have a +9 goal differential that leads the NHL. Calude Giroux leads the Flyers with seven points, and Bryzgalov is 3-0-1 with a 1.99 GAA and .927 SV%.
