Trying to figure out which team would end up being the Philadelphia Flyers' next opponent in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs has been something of a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma (with thanks for the use of the quote to Joe Pesci and Oliver Stone).

If nothing else, it's been an incredibly exciting time for hockey fans with three Game 7's over the course of two nights to set the second-round matchups in the Eastern Conference.

But after the Washington Capitals 3-2 overtime upset victory over the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of their conference quarterfinal series Wednesday night, things are beginning to become a little clearer.

With any of six possible teams still a possibility prior to the Washington-Boston affair, two potential opponents were eliminated from the mix with the Caps' triumph -- obviously, the Bruins, but also the New York Rangers. To say that this is a huge hurdle for Flyers Nation at this point in time -- Philly ended up 0-6-0 against the Rangers during the regular season -- could be an understatement.

By virtue of Washington's seventh postseason seed, if the Rangers defeat the Ottawa Senators tonight, the Capitals will open round two at Madison Square Garden.

The Flyers eventual counterparts for the East Semis is still up for grabs, and there are still quite a few different scenarios which can occur. It all seems very complicated, but it's actually just a matter of re-seeding the remaining teams based on their regular season finishes:

If the Rangers beat the Senators: New York and Washington will battle in Round 2, leaving either the Florida Panthers or New Jersey Devils as Philly's round two opposition. In addition to this scenario, if Florida wins, the Flyers will open the next round in South Florida. If the Devils win Game 7, the Flyers will host their Atlantic Division rivals from New Jersey.

If Ottawa defeats the Rangers: A scenario that includes New York out of the mix leaves the fifth-seeded Flyers, the seventh-seeded Caps, and eighth-seeded Senators. If that was to occur, a Panthers (third-seed) victory would yield Florida-Ottawa and Philadelphia-Washington as the second round matchups. If, however, the Rangers lose and New Jersey wins, this would become the best-case scenario for the Flyers. They would become the top-seeded club in the East, thereby garnering home-ice advantage for the next two rounds. Philadelphia would draw Ottawa as their second-round opponent, leaving the Capitals to open up their series in New Jersey.

The Rangers-Senators begin at 7:00 ET and Panthers-Devils at 8:30 ET, obviously with the start times staggered so interested observers can get a good look at both contests.

Barring any lengthy delays or multiple overtimes, the Flyers should know the identity of their Round 2 opponents somewhere around 11:00 ET.

Bring it on!

Just as things played out fairly well during their 2010 run to the Stanley Cup Finals, the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs could be shaping up rather nicely for the Philadelphia Flyers.

With all three of the other series still ongoing, potential upsets are the flavor of the early going. As such, the possibilities for Philadelphia's second round matchup are fairly broad at this point, with all six of the remaining teams in the East all in the mix:

Down in their series, 3-2, the East's top-seeded New York Rangers are in a do-or-die situation tonight in Ottawa against the Senators, and will be attempting to force a Game 7 back at Madison Square Garden on Thursday. Against NYR -- The Flyers were swept by the conference winners, posting a miserable 0-6 record against the Rangers. Against Sens -- Philly finished 2-1-1, winning the first two, then dropping the last pair.

The reigning Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins will take on the Washington Capitals in a winner-takes-all Game 7 on Wednesday night at TD Garden in Beantown. The Bruins won Game 6 in Washington on Sunday to set up the series decider, a second consecutive year Boston will be taken to the limit in the opening round. Against Boston -- Philly ended up 1-1-2 against the Bruins, winning the first, being demolished in the second, and dropping shootout decisions in the last two. Against Washington -- After dropping the first meeting in October, Philadelphia won the last three, including two intense, playoff-style tilts in March.

Having made the postseason for the first time since 2000, the Florida Panthers can close out the New Jersey Devils in Game 6 of their series tonight at the Prudential Center in Newark. Against Florida -- The Flyers finished 3-1 against the Cats, including a split of the last two meetings, both of which were played at the Wells Fargo Center in March. Against NJ -- Philly won the season series over their division rivals, 3-2-1. There were a couple of truly ugly efforts from the Orange-and-Black, bookended by a pair of 3-0 shutouts.

Some looked at Philadelphia's first-round matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins as something of a curse. By finishing fifth overall in the East, the Flyers got one of the toughest teams in the entire league as their opening round dance partner.

Although haunted by their arch-rivals from Pittsburgh pretty much since Sidney Crosby entered the NHL -- including losing to the Pens in playoff meetings in 2008 and 2009 -- the Flyers haven't had nearly as much trouble with the Pens over the course of the past two seasons.

Philadelphia finished the six-game regular season set with a 4-2 record, with a 2-1 mark both home and away. Their play at the CONSOL Energy Center has been nothing short of tremendous, as they won all seven meetings in Steel City until the last game of the season, when Peter Laviolette rested Claude Giroux and Ilya Bryzgalov because the contest meant nothing in the standings.

The fourth-ranked Penguins had a late season head of steam, sporting an 11-game winning streak in March, which was snapped by the Flyers. With the come-from-behind nature of most of Philly's victories over the Penguins in their spring matchups, the Flyers no doubt had a brimming confidence heading into round one.

That positive energy was intensified with two improbable comebacks in Games 1 and 2 in Pittsburgh, on the way to a sometimes wild six-game series triumph in one of the more memorable NHL series in the last couple of years..

The victory over the Pens is somewhat reminiscent of their 2010 first round win against New Jersey. Philadelphia seemed to own the Devils during the year, then continued that momentum with a 4-1 defeat of NJ in the first round.

While the Flyers mounted a comeback for the ages against Boston in the conference semifinals, overcoming an 0-3 deficit to take the series in seven, two of Philadelphia's tougher opponents -- the Capitals and Penguins, both of whom the club had struggled with during the regular season -- were each knocked out by Jaroslav Halak and the upstart Montreal Canadiens.

Having dodged Washington and Pittsburgh, Philly blew through the Habs in five hard-fought tilts to head to their first Cup final appearance since 1997, before eventually losing to the Chicago Blackhawks in six.

In what has been a very strange opening couple of weeks to the 2012 postseason, and although the club has a growing confidence that they can beat anyone in the league at the moment, the cards may once again be falling into place for a deep Philadelphia playoff run.

The Flyers await a second round match-up in the Eastern Conference Semifinals are taking care of the Penguins in six games.

The Philadelphia Flyers took care of business on Sunday afternoon, dispatching their interstate rival Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Six 5-1. Claude Giroux set the tone early with a huge hit on Sidney Crosby and followed it up with a goal 32 seconds into the affair.

Now, the Flyers will wait and watch the rest of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal match-ups take shape as the other three series are still very much up for grabs.

Star forward Claude Giroux set the tempo early by hitting and scoring 32 seconds into Sunday's Game 6 contest, and the rest of the Philadelphia Flyers followed suit. Four different Flyer players netted goals and goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov out-played Marc-Andre Fleury in a 5-1 victory, which ended the best-of-seven series between the two hated rivals.

The victory helped the Flyers close out the series in just six games, and advanced Philly into the Eastern Conference semifinals where they will play an unknown opponent. If the second round of the playoffs were to start on Monday, the No. 4-seeded Flyers would play the No. 7 Washington Capitals, who own a 3-2 series lead over No. 2 Boston Bruins.

Giroux finished the contest with a goal and an assists, both coming in the first period -- the latter setting a Flyers' franchise record with 13 points in a postseason series -- that ended with Philly ahead 2-0. The Flyers added two more goals -- the first by Erik Gustafsson, the second from Danny Briere -- in the second period to take a 4-1 margin heading into the third period.

In the final 20 minutes, the Flyers used solid defense and relied on Bryzgalov, who finished with 30 saves, to close out the win. Brayden Schenn scored an empty-net goal with eight seconds remaining and set the Philadelphia crowd into a frenzy.

Pittsburgh's lone goal came from forward Evgeni Malkin, who briefly helped the Pens' trim the margin to 3-1 in the second period. The Pens' had a possible second goal disallowed because a player ran into the goaltender as the puck trickled across the goal line.

The Philadelphia Flyers used goals by Erik Gustafsson and Danny Briere, respectively, to help pad their Game 6 advantage over the Pittsburgh Penguins to 4-1, as the contest has reached its second intermission. The Penguins, who down in the best-of-seven series 3-2 and could be eliminated with a Flyers victory, also tallied a goal in the second period, but they're still getting out-played at the Wells Fargo Center.

About three minutes later, the Penguins' Evgeni Malkin scored to trim the margin to 3-1 and build some momentum for Pittsburgh. However, just 34 seconds later, the Flyers' Briere pushed the lead back to three goals with a score at the 9:08 mark.

Wanting to set an early tempo that will hopefully help them close out rival Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday, the Philadelphia Flyers have done just that in the first period of Game 6 at the Wells Fargo Center. Star forward Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell both scored goals in the first 20 minutes to help their team earn a 2-0 advantage.

Giroux's goal, his sixth of the series, came just 32 seconds into the contest and was the Flyers first even-man goal in two games. Giroux wasn't done there, however, as he collected his 13th point of the series (a franchise record) by assisting on Hartnell's tally, which came during a power-play with about seven minutes to play. The score marked the Flyers' 12th extra-man goal of this series, which also sets a franchise record.
