The news was broke by Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., who admitted that's what the organization thought the issue was all along.

"We’d only like to have him miss a couple of starts but if he has to miss 3-4 starts then that is what it will be," Amaro said. "Hopefully it will be shorter than that."

in the same press conference, Amaro Jr. said second basemen Chase Utley was progressing well, but had no update on first basemen Ryan Howard.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee said an oblique strain which forced him to the disabled list was not a result of pitching 10 innings in his last start.

The lefty also said he is improving and should return to his normal spot in the rotation after his 15-day stint on the DL runs its course.

Via CSN Philly:

"We were debating on whether to just miss a start or go on the 15-day DL," he said. "So we erred on the side of caution and played it safe. I can't really argue with that.

"The past couple of days it was pretty sore. But today it felt better than yesterday. We're heading in the right direction. Hopefully I'll miss just a couple of starts and it will be back to normal."

Lee threw 102 pitches against the San Francisco Giants while throwing 10 shutout innings, but does not consider an over-sized workload to be part of his injury issues.

"That didn't matter," Lee said of the length of his outing. "I felt fine the whole time. I threw 102 pitches. I've thrown more pitches than that in five or six innings. I don't think that had anything to do with it."

In a surprising move yesterday, the Phillies placed Cliff Lee on the DL with an oblique strain. Despite the fact that he looked fantastic in his last start, throwing ten shutout innings, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro said that was the game where he strained the oblique.
↵
"I don't know what pitch it was, but he must have made a pitch that bothered him a little bit," Amaro said.
↵
He says that the Phillies are being cautious to be sure that they don't lose Lee for more than just a couple starts.
↵
"We're being very cautious with this," Amaro Jr. `'There's no reason for him to kind of completely blow it out because it's an injury that if he hurts himself and really pulls it, we could lose him for a long time. We'll shut him down, get him right and hopefully he'll miss only a couple of starts and go from there."
↵

The Phillies announced today that they've placed Cliff Lee on the 15 day DL with left oblique strain.

The Phillies announced today that they've placed Cliff Lee on the 15 day DL with left oblique strain. Joe Savery has been recalled to fill his place on the roster and Kyle Kendrick will make Lee's scheduled start on Monday. The move was made retroactive to April 19th, so he'll be eligible to come back on Friday, May 4th.

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr was asked if there was a chance that Lee could miss more than two starts?

"I hope not," Amaro said. "But again, obliques you just don't know how long they're going to take. He's shown improvement. We're hopeful that he's only going to miss a couple of starts. We have an off day in between. If we can slide him in on the 15th or 16th day, that would be great"

Lee pitched a career high 10 shut out innings Wednesday night against the San Francisco Giants. Although he didn't really throw a ton of pitches in that game. Still, given that he's headed to the DL straight afterward, expect to hear at least a few people second guessing Charlie Manuel's decision to let Lee go 10. Feel free to remind those people that he did only throw 102 pitches...

With their two best offensive players already out and the rest of the bats ineffective, the Phils can ill afford for any of their aces to miss starts. Lee has generally been a workhorse in recent years so you wouldn't expect a lot of DL time for him, but anyway you slice it, two fewer Cliff Lee starts is not what the Phillies need now.
