While Danny Califf's on field performances weren't always something to cheer about, there was no doubting that he had a great relationship with the Union's fans. He says that the fact that he and his family were enjoying Philly so much that he did not want to be traded. This is in contrast to Peter Nowak's implication that Califf wanted to be traded somewhere in his hometown Southern California.
↵
↵
"It made me want to throw up," Califf told the Philadelphia Daily News. "Change is never easy and when you give your heart to something and much of yourself, and it all gets ripped out from under you, that part of yourself is essentially ripped away.
↵
"It's like putting a Band-Aid on a scab and then ripping the Band-Aid off over and over and over again. I understand that these types of trades happen in professional sports all the time, I mean I am not stupid to this fact, but we were just in a really good place as a family (here in Philadelphia) and that's why it hurt so bad.
↵
↵
The feeling appears to be mutual. The Union fans over the Brotherly game are none too happy about the decision to deal away the club's captain.
↵

The Philadelphia Union have reportedly agreed to trade their captain Danny Califf to Chivas USA. The Union will receive a player in return and either an MLS SuperDraft selection, international roster spot or allocation money.

The Philadelphia Union have agreed to trade captain Danny Califf to Chivas USA, according to a report (CSN Philly). An official announcement from the Union is expected in the near future.

Union coach Peter Nowak confirmed the trade but says the trade is not complete on the league's side of things.

"We've been in contact every day, getting his mind to embrace the whole situation," said Nowak in regards to Califf, a California native. "He mentioned that at some point it was going to be time to go home with his family and go back to California. This will happen sooner or later. We decided to conclude this trade and that's the situation.

"It will be confirmed soon. It's not up for us to release this stuff, it's a league process. It's not our deal, it's a process we have to be involved in but need to respect it."

The Union defender has only played in four matches this season, in part because of a hamstring strain. With Califf on the way out, just four players remain from the roster from Philadelphia's inaugural season of 2010.

Unlike the trade of star forward Sebastien Le Toux, Nowak said that Califf wanted to be traded.

"For player purposes, he wants to go this way and we try to accommodate as soon as we can," Nowak said. "I'm glad we resolved this situation and he'll go back home to play with some coaches he knows. Going home is always a good thing."
