The USMNT will need to be better than this when World Cup qualifying starts in 5 days. They played out to a rather dour goalless draw with CONCACAF rivals Canada at BMO Field in Toronto.

Overall the US looked tired and rather uninspired. They got off to a bright start and controlled play early, but as the game wore on the US faded and Canada actually enjoyed long periods of possession. That said, neither team really ever took hold of the match and scoring chances in general were at a minimum.

Clint Dempsey had what was probably the best chance of the evening for the US when he nearly went through clean before the Canadian keeper Lars Hirschfeld picked the ball off his feet. The vaunted Dempsey/Donovan combo never produced the kind of magic USMNT fans were expecting as Donovan didn’t see a lot of the ball and Dempsey had few chances in the final third. In fact, Dempsey drifted back into midfield often, which only further limited the US attacking options up top.

Canada probably had the best chances of the night, including a shocking miss from Simeon Jackson, who should have stuck in the game winner off a Dwayne DeRosario cross in stoppage time. The US also had a great chance just moments later when Clarence Goodson had a great header saved by Lars Hirschfeld.

US fans will likely question coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s use of Michael Bradley, who played in a deep holding role and failed to make much of an impact. Bradley has typically been most effective as a box-to-box attacking midfielder and never seemed to get into the game sitting in front of the back four. Fans will also wonder whether if Bradley was up higher, that Clint Dempsey would not have had to drop back as far as he was.

The result means the US extends their unbeaten streak against Cananda to 15 games. The Nats will kick off their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign on Friday, June 8th in Tampa against Antigua & Barbuda.

As the United States Men's National Soccer Team takes the field for its final tune up before World Cup qualifying begins, one player who has already earned his spot amongst the starters will be fighting as if he hadn't. The hard working Michael Bradley, who is the son of former US coach Bob Bradley, has quickly grown into a well traveled international player and a fixture in the United States' side.

The interesting thing is that his father's firing may have done more to legitimize him as a player than anything. No more can he be accused as being on the squad due to nepotism, not that he ever cared if people thought he was.

"That stuff never weighed on me," Bradley told ESPN. "It wasn't stuff that ever bothered me. When I say that I concentrate on the team and improving myself, part of that is having a mentality that says things that go on outside the team, off the field, you're not going to let bother you."

At the club level, Bradley moved from Germany to Chievo Verona in Italy's Serie A, which made his new national team coach very happy.

"I think he took a big step over the last year," says U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. "That move to Italy helped him tremendously. He learned a lot on the tactical side of the game, but he also, his personality, his maturing development made a big step. He's on his way to becoming one of the leaders in this group. He's on a very good path."

Bradley says that whether playing for club or country, he'll never be satisfied.

"As a person I'm more committed than ever to doing whatever it takes to get to the highest level. I've always been somebody who has had big ambitions and has set high goals for myself. I've always given all of myself to try to reach those."

Michael Bradley will take the field for the USMNT tonight against Canada. The game can be seen on NBC Sports Network at 7pm.

The United States Men's National Soccer Team take on their CONCACAF rivals, Canada, in an international friendly tonight at BMO Field in Toronto. The match kicks off just after 7 p.m. and can be seen on NBC Sports Network in English and Univision Deportes in Spanish.

It's the 3rd game of manager Jurgen Klinsmann's 5 games in 18 days mini tournament, designed to simulate the training atmosphere of a real tournament like the World Cup. For Canada, the match will be a part of the celebrations commemorating 100 years of their national soccer program.

The USMNT has had two very different results so far in their first two games of the summer. They kicked it off with a 5-1 drubbing of Scotland, but in game 2 they were on the wrong end of a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of 5-time world champions Brazil.

The US brings a strong record into their match with Canadians, going 13-8-9 all time. They've been even better in recent years riding a 14 game unbeaten streak with their last lost coming in 1985. This will be the first time the two sides meet in Toronto in 43 years.

Tonight's match will mark the final tuneup for the USMNT before World Cup 2014 qualifying begins on June 8th, which means players have a final chance to impress head man Jurgen Klinsmann. The outspoken German says that the players will always know what he thinks of them, whether they like it or not.

"You're not there to make friends. You are there to build something very strong and hopefully people will like to see them two years down the road," Klinsmann explained. "Now I think that's important for the players to see, that you're not there to please them. I am there to make them better. That's a very, very different thing. So that means that sometimes maybe I have to be uncomfortable. Sometimes I have to be more strict.

Landon Donovan, who is now the all time USMNT leader in both caps and goals, says the team is finally starting to grasp the style of soccer Klinsmann wants them to play.

"Every coach has a different style. Every coach has a different way of doing things, of approaching the game. And I think we're finally learning and understanding what he wants us to do," said Donovan. "I think Jurgen wants us to be daring and aggressive and do the things we're good at. We've always been a team that is very good defensively. We always worked hard. Our energy and our spirit is good, and we're trying to get better at the things we haven't been good at."

It was a tale of 2 halves for the US Men’s team tonight against Brazil, but the conclusion for both was the same. Brazil scored 2 goals in each half en route to a 4-1 victory at FedEx Field in Maryland.

Brazil dominated possession in the first half and took a 2-0 after 26 minutes on the back of goals from Neymar and Thiago Silva. It wasn’t until late in the first that the US managed to get themselves a chance and they converted it. Fabian Johnson played in a cross that found the head of Herculez Gomez to cut the Brazilian lead in half.

Overall though, the score flattered the US as Brazil controlled the game and wasted a number of chances that could have made the score bigger than it was. The second would be a totally different story, but the result was the same.

The USMNT controlled possession and got the vast majority of the chances in the 2nd, but left with nothing to show for it. Oguchi Onyewu hit the post with a header off a corner and two sure fire goals were saved with miraculous stops from the Brazilian keeper Rafael. He was really the star of the 2nd half for Brazil.

In true Brazilian fashion though, they were deadly on the counter-attack with a pair of by Marcelo and Alexandre Pato. After the first half, the 2-1 score flattered the US, but in the end 4-1 probably isn’t a fair representation of how they played.

Still, there’s quite clearly a gap between these two sides which should come at no surprise. At any given moment you could probably make a decent argument as to why Brazil is the best team on the planet. So for the US to play the way they did in the 2nd half, leaves fans with some positives.

The US is back in action on Sunday when they travel to BMO field in Toronto to take on Canada.

A pair of set pieces put Brazil up 1-0 over the USMNT in their international friendly at FedEx Field in Maryland. The first came as a result of penalty given when Oguchi Onyewu was charged with handling the ball in the box. Budding superstar Neymar converted the spot kick for the first goal of the game.

US fans will likely complain a bit about the penalty, given that it was a case more of the ball playing the arm rather than the other way around… however, Gooch’s arm was up, which is going to make it much more likely to be called. Refs will usually let a handball in the box if the defender keeps his arms at his sides, but Gooch did not do that here.

The second Brazil goal came on yet another set piece, when defender Thiago Silva was left alone to nod in a corner kick in the 26th minute.

The US would fight back in the dying moments of the first half. Fabian Johnson, who was arguably the USMNT’s best player in the half, played the ball across the net to Herculez Gomez, who headed in to cut Brazil’s lead in half.

Overall, it was quite clear that the US was second best and to be frank, the 2-1 score flatters them. If the Nats don’t improve in the second half, the several chances Brazil wasted in the first half are likely to start bulging the net in the second.

There are reinforcements on the way, with Clint Dempsey warming up and likely to come on in the second half. Dempsey is coming off a breakout season in which he scored 17 goals in the English Premier League for Fulham. It will be the first time in the Jurgen Klinsmann era that Dempsey will have played with the other US talisman, Landon Donovan.

The United States Men's National team take on perennial soccer powerhouse Brazil in an international friendly tonight at FedEx Field in Maryland.

The United States Men's National Soccer Team take on perennial soccer powerhouse Brazil in an international friendly tonight at FedEx Field in Maryland. The game kicks off just after 8 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN2 in English, Telefutura in Spanish and online at ESPN3.com.

Tonight's matchup is the 2nd of 5 games the USMNT will play in 18 days as manager Jurgen Klinsmann attempts to create a tournament like atmosphere for the team. There is no notable tournament for the US to play in this summer, so scheduling the summer the way he has will give Klinsmann the best chance to prepare his side for the World Cup qualifying ahead.

"We’re treating this period of time like it would be a small tournament because this camp is a lot about how the players build chemistry and deal with a longer period of time being together," Klinsmann said . "It’s about how they are willing to go the extra mile in that time period to answer a lot of questions in that stretch. That’s why we’re calling it almost a mini-tournament."

The USMNT got their "tournament" off to a flying start with a 5-1 drubbing of Scotland, but will face a notably stiffer test tonight in the 5 time World Cup champions Brazil. However, Klinsmann says that it doesn't matter who his side plays in what type of setting, he expects the same level of effort.

"No matter who we play or what type of game we play, whether it’s Antigua or Brazil, we represent the United States of America," Klinsmann said. "It’s a requirement that every player comes in with 100 percent commitment and with an attitude that he puts everything into the game."

While this may just be a friendly, the importance of playing Brazil is not diminished in the eyes of the US players.

"It's Brazil. We've all played Brazil," said Michael Bradley. "We all know what playing games against them means. Their ability with the ball to take little plays and make the most of them is at the highest level. We know we are going to need a strong effort."

"There are three points on the line when we play a qualifier, but these games [against the likes of Brazil and Italy in February] are vitally important to us," goalkeeper Tim Howard said. "Dignity also plays a part, and no one wants to lose. We're a bunch of prideful guys."

The US has a long, but not very successful history against Brazil. The two nations have met 16 times over the last 82 years with Brazil winning 15. The lone US victory came in 1998 when the Nats knocked off A Seleção 1-0 in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The recent history has been a little better. Brazil needed extra time to defeat the US 2-1 in the Gold Cup in 2003 and there was the memorable Confederations Cup final in 2009 when Brazil came from 2-0 to beat the US 3-2.

It should be a fantastic test tonight and a great barometer of where the US is at under Klinsmann. Playing in front of a record crowd against the most storied team in the world, you can be sure the US won't be treating this game as simply a friendly. For Brazil, it's never acceptable to lose and they've probably more talent on their 3rd string than the US will start... so expect no quarter tonight and a pretty cracking game.

Landon Donovan's hat trick led the US Men's National Soccer team to 5-1 drubbing of Scotland Saturday night at EverBank field in Jacksonville.

Landon Donovan's hat trick led the US Men's National Soccer team to 5-1 drubbing of Scotland Saturday night at EverBank field in Jacksonville. Donovan's hat trick was his second for the Nats in the state of Florida, his last coming against Ecuador in 2007. The three goals put Donovan just one shy of 50 for his career at the international level

Donovan opened the scoring and rightly earned man of match honors, but the highlight of the night undoubtedly belongs to Michael Bradley, whose right footed half volley with an almost impossible slice on it doubled the Americans lead and sent the record crowd into a frenzy.

It was a thing of beauty and Bradley's 10th international goal. Donovan would score the next two goals and Jermaine Jones would add one more to complete the rout of the Scots.

The win gets the US summer off to a roaring start. Jurgen Klinsmann's club will play 5 games in 18 days in what is meant to be a mock tournament style schedule as the team prepares for World Cup 2014 qualifying. They will next face the host nation of that World Cup as the legendary Brazil comes to Maryland for a friendly on Wednesday night. The USMNT then faces Canada the following Sunday.
