The Philadelphia Phillies will finally have second baseman Chase Utley back in the lineup on Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team activated Utley from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday afternoon. In order to add Utley back into the lineup (he will bat third), the Phils optioned infielder Michael Martinez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley (via MLB).

Utley has missed the entire 2012 season so far with a knee problem (bilateral chondromalacia). In rehab stints, Utley played nine games for Class-A Clearwater and one game Lehigh Valley.

Last season, Utley hit .259 with 11 homers, 44 RBI and 39 walks in 103 games. Martinez struggled at the MLB level and only hit .133 with a home run and 4 RBI in 16 games for Philadelphia this season.

Chase Utley continues to gear up for a return to the Philadelphia Phillies, giving his clearest indication Saturday night that his rehab assignment may be coming to an end sooner than later.

As reported by Phillies beat writer Ryan Lawrence, Utley played eight innings at second base for the Clearwater Threshers on Saturday in a 7-2 victory over the Daytona Cubs. Utley finished 0-3 but did record an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was his second straight start for the Threshers and his ninth overall rehab appearance.

The Phillies will complete a doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday before embarking on a four game homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates beginning on Monday, June 25.

Utley, who is about to play his ninth game on his rehab assignment, has not yet found his stroke at the plate. In 29 at-bats, he has just five hits. However, he stole a base in his last game, showing that he is feeling more comfortable on his knee.

The Phillies have been playing Michael Martinez at second base.

Utley's other hit was a single as he helped Clearwater to a 3-2 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays. He left the game after eight innings after starting at second base. At the time he left the game, Utley had batted in both of Clearwater's runs and managed two of his team's three hits. Three more hits in the ninth inning allowed Clearwater to eke out the victory.

With the first multi-hit game of his rehab assignment, Utley raised his batting average to .217 (5-for-23). He did not register an error in four chances in the field.

The struggles of the Philadelphia Phillies have folks around the league talking.
With a $172 million dollar payroll and a last-place 31-36 record to show for it, some see Philadelphia looking to make some moves if they can't turn things around soon.

Philadelphia Phillies injured second baseman Chase Utley played five innings in an intrasquad game on Saturday, according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer. It's a small sign of progress for a player who just recently returned to the field.

The 33-year-old second baseman has yet to appear in a Major League game this season, as he deals with a knee injury. He's coming off his worst season as a professional, where he hit a career-low .259, with only 11 home runs and 44 runs batted in.

From 2005 to 2009, there were no better second baseman in all of baseball than Chase Utley. And it wasn't even close. Utley's cumulative WAR over that period was 39.2 – the next highest was 23.5.

Chase Utley got back in action for single-A Clearwater but went 0-5.

Chase Utley had a big zero in the hit column Tuesday night for single-A Clearwater on his rehab assignment. The story of course isn't the lack of a hit, but that there were plate appearances in the first place.

Utley has missed the entire season far but looks like he could be back in three weeks. The Philadelphia Phillies have him on a 20-day rehab plan before he rejoins the major league club.

Right now, the next step is getting Utley onto the field as a second baseman and not a designated hitter, which he was on Tuesday, according to Pennlive.com.

"He'll let his body dictate how fast he can get to the field and do that kind of stuff where he starts playing second base in games, but he seems to be moving around well," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "It doesn't look like he has a whole lot of hesitancy and restriction, and that's a good sign."

The Phillies desperately need Utley to come back and provide some punch for an offense that has struggled.

Utley has been responding very well in extended Spring Training. He went 2-for-5 last Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays with a home run. He went 3-for-4 with another home run two days prior. Utley is running bases, which is a good sign. He still isn't playing defense, however.

Utley has now missed 62 games this season. The Phillies have suffered without his bat in the lineup. The team ranks eighth in the NL with 261 runs scored this season.
