Jim Thome hit a three-run home run in the in the third inning to help lift the Philadelphia Phillies over the Minnesota Twins, 6-1, in Game 3 of the three-game series at Target Field. The Phillies recorded consecutive wins for the first time since beating the New York Mets and Miami Marlins back-to-back to start the month.

Joe Blanton (6-6) settled down nicely after giving up a solo home run to Trevor Plouffe in the second inning. He gave up just one earned run in nine innings pitched, striking out seven while giving up seven hits and no walks.

Twins starter Scott Diamond (5-2) was much shakier. Ty Wigginton hit his seventh home run of the season in the second inning to put the Phillies up 1-0. In the third, Diamond gave up a double to Jimmy Rollins to lead off the inning, and walked Hunter Pence to set up Thome's blast with two outs to go in the inning. Diamond was relieved after giving up four earned runs off five hits and two walks in six innings. He gave up two home runs and struck just one.

Carlos Ruiz double to left field to score Shane Victorino in the eight inning, and Placido Polanco singled to right to score Rollins in the ninth. Rollins continued his solid month of June by going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double.

The Phillies will begin a three-game road series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, starting at 7:07 p.m. ET. Vance Worley (3-2, 3.00 ERA) will go up against Drew Hutchison (5-3, 4.66) at the mound.

After splitting the first two games of the series, the Philadelphia Phillies have a chance to win a second game against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night. The Phillies desperately need another win to salvage what has been a rough month; Wednesday night's win was only their third of the month.

Joe Blanton gets the ball to start. Like his team, Blanton could stand to get things on track. He has given up at least five earned runs in each of his last five starts. During that span his ERA has ballooned from 2.96 to 5.40, thanks in part to allowing a total of 11 home runs through that same period.

Minnesota counters with Scott Diamond, 5-1, a pitcher who has not allowed an earned run in either of his last two starts. In seven starts this season, the lefty has a 1.61 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.

The game starts at 8:10 p.m. Eastern from Target Field in Minneapolis. Fans can see the game on PHL 17.

The starting pitchers struggled on Wednesday night in Minneapolis. This game was one for the hitters, and the Philadelphia Phillies got a trio of home runs from their lineup in a 9-8 win over the Minnesota Twins.

The Phillies ended P.J. Walters' night almost as soon as it started. They put up six runs in the top of the first inning, attributing four to Walters, who left the game before getting a single out. They added another five runs to their total beating up a pair of relief pitchers.

Cole Hamels struggled himself. He surrendered six earned runs, including two homers, in six innings of work, but he did manage to pick up the win, his ninth of the season. Hamels has now given up 18 earned runs in his last four starts.

Jonathan Papelbon picked up one out in the eighth inning and retired the side in the ninth for his 17th save of the season.

John Mayberry Jr. hit a home run and double, driving in four runs in the game. Jim Thome also drove in four, adding his second home run of the season.

The Phillies have one more game against the Twins on Thursday night and the chance to win the series.

Philadelphia Phillies injured rookie second baseman Freddy Galvis will be in a back brace for at least three weeks instead of at least six weeks. Galvis received a second opinion on his fractured back (pars fracture of his L45 vertebra) from Dr. Peter Moley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York (via Philly.com).

The Phillies acknowledge that Galvis will miss a significant amount of time but have not said that his 2012 season is over. With the second opinion, the time Galvis will spend in the back brace has been potentially cut in half. However, if he does not show enough improvement after three weeks, Galvis could be spending more time in the brace.

The Phillies were not able to pinpoint a certain play during which the injury occurred.

In 58 games for Philadelphia this season, Galvis hit .226 with three home runs, 24 RBI and seven walks.

The Philadelphia Phillies look to snap a three-game losing skid Wednesday night when they visit the Minnesota Twins for the second leg of a three-game series. (Game Time: 8:10 p.m., TV Schedule: CSN Philly)

Philadelphia will turn to Cole Hamels, who will also be looking to reverse recent results. The lefty, who has coughed up three-run leads in each of his last two starts, both losses, hasn't lost three consecutive starts since 2010.

The Phillies lost the series opener on Tuesday when they allowed three home runs, 11 runs and 17 hits in an 11-7 defeat. Starter Kyle Kendrick was knocked off the mound after surrendering six runs in four innings.

The Twins will counter Hamels with P.J. Walters, who has a 6.46 ERA over his last three outings.

The Philadelphia Phillies dropped their series opener against the Minnesota Twins, 11-7, at Target Field on Tuesday night. Both starting pitchers struggled on the mound. Kyle Kendrick (2-6) lasted just four innings after giving up six runs, all earned, off eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts. The Twins' Nick Blackburn (3-4) was only moderately better, giving up four earned runs off eight hits and two walks in five innings.

Denard Span hit a home run in the Twins' first at-bat of the night, and Trevor Plouffe hit a two-run homer in the second inning as the Twins took a 5-0 lead after just two innings. The Phillies responded with four runs in the fourth inning to pull back within striking distance. Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run double as part of a 4-5 performance at the plate.

Unfortunately, Philadelphia's bullpen simply couldn't stop the bleeding on the scoreboard. Joe Savery gave up three more earned runs in his two innings of relief for Kendrick, including a solo home run to Josh Willingham in the sixth inning to put the Twins up 9-7.

Philadelphia scored three runs in the top of the sixth, two of which came on a Jim Thome single to left field. The inning would cap their scoring on the night, however. The Twins finished their night with two more runs in the seventh.

Game 2 of the series is set for Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. ET. Expect a much better performance on the mound for both teams, as Cole Hamels (8-3, 2.93 ERA) goes up against the Twins' P.J. Walters (2-1, 4.42) at the mound.

Philadelphia will send Kyle Kendrick (2-5, 4.44 ERA) to the mound to try and get the Phillies back on track. Kendrick has been one of Philadelphia's more consistent pitchers, giving up two earned runs or less in six of his last eight starts.
