The Philadelphia Phillies were swept in their three game series against the Tornto Blue Jays, losing by a score of 6-2 Sunday afternoon. The Phillies drop to 31-37 with the loss.

Kyle Kendrick was the starter for the Phillies, and he was unable to improve on his last outing as he gave up six runs on eight hits through 6.1 innings. Jacob Diekman and Jonathan Papelbon gave up no additional runs out of the bullpen, but without support from the offense it was no help.

John Mayberry Jr. and Shane Victorino both had good days at the plate, with Mayberry going 3-4 and Victorino 2-4. Mayberry had a solo home run for one of the Phillies' two runs, with the other coming on a solo home run from Jim Thome. The Phillies did put two on in the ninth, but it amounted to nothing when a pinch hitting Mike Fontenot grounded into a fielder's choice. The loss was the third straight to the Blue Jays and the 11th of Philadelphia's last 14.

The Phillies return home on Tuesday, hosting the Colorodo Rockies in the first of a three game series. The game is scheduled for 7:00pm EDT.

The Philadelphia Phillies have just four wins in the month of June. It looked like they might add a fifth on Saturday, but the Toronto Blue Jays beat them with an RBI single in extra innings, two innings after the Phillies blew a 5-2 lead. On Sunday, Philadelphia looks to avoid the sweep.

Right-hander Kyle Kendrick (2-6), 5.08 ERA) will need to be sharper than he was in his last start when he surrendered six earned runs in four innings to the Twins. In the start before that, Kendrick also picked up a loss after allowing five earned runs in less than six innings against the Dodgers.

Brandon Morrow was originally scheduled to start, but he landed on the disabled list earlier in the week, giving the Phillies something of a break. In his place is Brett Cecil, who was promoted from Triple-A on Friday. Cecil has a 4.64 ERA in 65 career starts. This will be his first major league appearance of the season.

The Philadelphia Phillies (31-36) dropped their second consecutive game to the Toronto Blue Jays (33-32), after blowing an eighth inning lead, and being outlasted in extra innings.

Cliff Lee (ND, 3.48 ERA) pitched turned in a terrific seven-inning performance before running into trouble in the eight, when he allowed the first three batters to reach base, before being pulled. He was also the victim of a Jimmy Rollins throwing error, causing two of his five runs allowed to be unearned.

Joe Savery – who took the mound in the 10th inning – was pinned with his second loss of the season, after allowing one hit, one walk and the game-winning run – an RBI single off the bat of Jays outfielder Rajai Davis.

The Phils will look to avoid the sweep on Sunday.

Philadelphia Phillies injured second baseman Chase Utley played five innings in an intrasquad game on Saturday, according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer. It's a small sign of progress for a player who just recently returned to the field.

The 33-year-old second baseman has yet to appear in a Major League game this season, as he deals with a knee injury. He's coming off his worst season as a professional, where he hit a career-low .259, with only 11 home runs and 44 runs batted in.

From 2005 to 2009, there were no better second baseman in all of baseball than Chase Utley. And it wasn't even close. Utley's cumulative WAR over that period was 39.2 – the next highest was 23.5.

Philadelphia Phillies catcher, Carlos Ruiz, left Friday's game with a strained oblique. It was originally feared that he would have to be placed on the disabled list, but according to Matt Gelb, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, that may not be the case anymore.

Carlos Ruiz sprayed Rogers Centre with line drives in batting practice Saturday morning and walked behind the cage to see Charlie Manuel, who was rendered speechless 12 hours earlier when asked to consider the possibility of life without his catcher.

[...]

While the Phillies front office prepared for a lengthy absence, Ruiz said he could play immediately.

The 33-year-old catcher is having a tremendous season, sporting a gaudy batting average of .362. He already has eight home runs – just one away from his career-high.

The Philadelphia Phillies began their three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays with a 3-0 loss on Friday, and it won't get any easier on Saturday, when they face Blue Jays ace, Ricky Romero.

Friday's loss snapped the Phillies' modest two-game winning streak – they're now 3-10 in their last 13 games. At 31-35 on the season, the Phillies are bringing up the rear in the National League East Division, behind the Washington Nationals, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, and Miami Marlins. They're nine games out of first place, but only five games back of the Wild Card.

Cliff Lee will oppose Ricky Romero on Saturday. Lee – one of three aces on the Phillies staff – has yet to record a win this season because of injuries and lack of run support.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:07 p.m. ET.

The Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 3-0, dropping Game 1 of the three game interleague series. Toronto starting pitcher Drew Hutchinson left the game in the first, but the Phillies were unable to figure out the Jays bullpen.

The Phillies picked up five hits but were never able to capitalize, going 0-6 with runners in scoring position and leaving 10 on base. Starting pitcher Vance Worley gave up three runs through seven innings, only one of which was an earned run. A throwing error by Mike Fontenot handed the Jays a run in the fourth on what could have been a double play, leaving the door open for Edwin Encarnacion to score on a groundout by Yunel Escobar.

The Phillies loss comes after back-to-back wins and is their 10th loss in 13 games. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 1:07pm EDT on Saturday.

Philadelphia Phillies injured starting pitcher Roy Halladay is making some progress on his return. Halladay reported played catch with the Phillies pitching coach while a trainer looked on. Halladay made 30 throws from 60 feet and will play catch again on Sunday (via Jim Salisbury).

Halladay was given a six-to-eight week timetable for his return earlier in June when he was diagnosed with a strained lat in his shoulder. Halladay was pulled from the third inning of the Phillies game with the Cardinals on May 27 with shoulder soreness.

On the 2012 season, Halladay has made 11 starts. His record is 4-5 and he has a 3.98 ERA. Halladay struggled in his last three starts, giving up a combined five home runs and 12 earned runs in those starts. After beginning the season 3-0, Halladay has just one win in his last eight starts.
