McManus made his mark in the crosstown rivalry two years ago with a game-winning field goal with under a minute left. No heroics were needed this year in Temple's comfortable victory, but McManus hit both of his field goals, nailed five extra points, and excelled punting the ball, nailing a 61-yarder that pinned the Wildcats all the way back at the two-yard line after a brief return.

Temple fans are used to McManus by this point: the senior is in his fourth year as Temple's primary kicker and his second handling both kicking and punting duties for the Owls. This might not be the last time he earns a reward for his work.

The Temple Owls took the Mayor's Cup in convincing fashion on Friday night, blowing out FBS rival Villanova, 41-10.

The Owls overpowered 'Nova on the ground, rushing for more than 300 yards as they put it away early in the second half. Matt Brown led all Owls rushers with 18 carries for 141 yards, averaging nearly eight yards per carry. A big 56-yard touchdown burst in the final 30 seconds of the first half really sealed things up and deflated the Wildcats as the teams went to the locker room.

The 28-10 halftime lead would be more than enough for Temple, as their defense clamped down in the second to keep Villanova off the board. Kenneth Harper, who racked up 51 yards on just five carries, broke one open for a 36-yard scamper less than three minutes into the third quarter. The long run came on top of Brown's big run before the intermission to add to a night of quick strike big plays that ensured the Owls avoided the upset.

The Temple Owls lead their FBS rival Villanova 28-10 after the first half of the Mayor's Cup at Lincoln Financial Field. The Owls gashed the Wildcats on the ground, averaging seven yards per carry and racking up 183 yards in the first 30 minutes. Matt Brown has carried the ball nine times and already amassed 96 yards, while quarterback Chris Coyer has rushed it 10 times for 66 yards. Villanova came up with a couple key holds on defense, but they struggled to find an answer up front for the Temple rushing attack.

Both Coyer and Brown have scored on the ground, but the real backbreaker for the Wildcats came when Brown busted one for 56 yards in the final 30 seconds of the half to push the lead to 18 points.

The Owls also added a defensive touchdown at the start of the second quarter when Vaughn Carraway picked off Chris Polony and took it to the house from 58 yards out. Polony, who got the start but has rotated with John Robertson, tried to force it into double coverage and Carraway was there for the pick six.

There aren't many true FBS/FCS rivalries, unless maybe you count Michigan and Appalachian State. But over the past four years, Villanova and Temple have made the Mayor's Cup into a battle for bragging rights.

Three of the four games the pair have contested in the past decade have been decided on the last play, with the 2009 FCS champions winning two of the matchups. Last year was a blowout in Temple's favor, but Villanova will try to make a game of it Friday night in the final matchup between the two schools for the foreseeable future. The Owls are favored in the first game of their first season in the Big East, but Villanova is a strong team for its level, and this matchup has produced some exciting games in the past.

The Temple Owls and Villanova Wildcats meet in Philadelphia on Friday night to decide which side will take home the Mayor's Cup in the season debut for both teams.

Temple is coming off a 9-4 2011 campaign, their last in the Mid-American Conference as they join the Big East this year. In 2011 they defeated Wyoming in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl 37-15 to end the season. The Owls also demolished Villanova in the season opener a year ago, 42-7.

Under new head coach Steve Addazio the Owls are expected by some pundits to regress from their successful run in 2011.

The Wildcats, out of the Colonial Athletic Association, finished near the bottom last season at 1-7, their lone victory coming over Pennsylvania on Sept. 24., 30-21.

This will be the 33rd overall meeting between the two teams, and the Owls have won the previous two contests. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Temple and Villanova may be on different levels of the college football world, but the Mayor's Cup has turned into a nice rivalry between the schools over the past several years. Sadly, it is one that will disappear from schedules for the time being.

Friday's matchup marks the 33rd meeting between the two teams and the fourth straight year the two will play, with the 2009 FCS champions actually holding the 16-14-2 edge over their top-tier competition. Three of the four games contested between the two teams in the past 10 years have been highly competitive, with the game being decided on the final play.

The Owls and Wildcats first met in 1908, but the two teams didn't play much in the modern era until a stretch of 11 games from 1970-1980. The rivalry then went on hiatus again, with the teams not facing off until 2003. That game was a thriller, with 'Nova forcing double overtime in Temple's first home game at Lincoln Financial Field, pulling out a 23-20 victory thanks to clutch kicking.

In 2009, the game began to be called the "Mayor's Cup." The Wildcats, en route to a championship, again came back late and walked off winners when Nick Yako nailed a 32-yard field goal. The 2010 game had a crazy finish, with Temple pulling ahead 25-24 on a late field goal by Brandon McManus, and Villanova's attempt at lateraling its way to victory ended with the ball in Temple's hands as it scored another touchdown with time expired, winning 31-24. Last year's matchup was not so kind to the FCS team, as the Owls ran away with a 42-7 victory.

Temple and Villanova are off each other's future schedules for the time being, meaning this will be the last iteration of the Mayor's Cup for at least three more years.

Temple and Villanova will meet on the football field for the final time in Friday's Mayor's Cup game from Lincoln Financial Field.

Temple and Villanova are a natural Philadelphia rivalry as both schools are separated by a mere 12 miles.

On Friday, the two schools will meet on the football field for the final time in their annual Mayor's Cup game at Lincoln Financial Field. The Owls and Wildcats were contracted to play four games and Friday's contest marks the completion of that contract.

Temple holds a 2-1 edge in the series after winning last year's game, 42-7. Owls head coach Steve Addazio and Wildcats head man Andy Talley would both like to see the games continue according to Philly.com:

"I'd love to see it continue," Addazio said. "One of the things I love about college football is the rivalry games, and one of the big things about rivalry games is proximity."

"This game is great because it's two Philadelphia teams playing in Philadelphia," Talley said. "There's no travel. It's great for the fans of both programs."
