When the Temple Owls put their schedule together this summer, they were not expecting Wednesday night's game against the Canisius Golden Griffins to be a challenge. When they went into the locker room up eight at the half, they might have been expecting to coast to victory.
Instead, Canisius fought back in the second half and pulled off the upset, 72-62, in the Gotham Classic in Philadelphia.
The Golden Griffins used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to take the lead, then made all 10 of their free throws in the final 2:43 to seal it. Canisius was 16-of-18 from the stripe for the game.
Canisius' Billy Baron led all scorers with 19 points, and Khalif Wyatt had 17 for Temple. The Owls turned the ball over just four times, but were outrebounded, 36-28, and shot 35.5 percent to 43.4 percent for the Golden Griffins.
Up next, things don't get much easier for the Owls. They host No. 3 Syracuse Saturday at noon, also part of the Gotham Classic.
