The Villanova Wildcats resume their 2011-12 college basketball season Tuesday night at home against the La Salle Explorers.
Villanova began its season Friday with a 106-70 victory against Monmouth. Juniors Dominic Cheek and Mouphtaou Yarou both established career highs, with 27 and 24 points, respectively, and the Wildcats drained 12 triples while scoring more points in a season opener than any Villanova team since 1979.
"I liked that we got better than we were against New York Tech (in Tuesday's exhibition game)," stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright, who recorded his 225th victory as Wildcat head coach in the first game of his 11th season.
"Our juniors made shots and the attention they paid to Maalik (Wayns) opened some things up for us. We've got work to do, especially guarding the dribble drive, but I thought this was a good step for us."
La Salle also opened the season with a win, defeating Lafayette 79-53 on Friday night. Tyreek Duren scored 17 points to lead four Explorers in double figures.
