The Purdue Boilermakers rallied from a double-digit deficit, but the Villanova Wildcats made a comeback of their own to force overtime, where the Wildcats took control and won, 89-81, in the 2K Sports Classic in Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
Down by six with under one minute to play, the Wildcats tied the game by hitting six consecutive free throws, which set up the overtime period.
Every player on the Purdue roster scored in Thursday's contest, but the Boilermakers were led by 16 points from D.J. Byrd, who fouled out. Villanova was led by guard Darrun Hilliard, who scored a game-high 22 points.
The Wildcats took a 35-29 lead into halftime. They were on top for most of the first half.
Villanova increased their advantage to ten about five minutes into the second half at 45-35, but following a Purdue timeout, the Boilermakers began to chip away at the lead. Eventually, the game's table was completely turned, as Purdue extended their lead at one point to 61-53 with about seven minutes to play in the game.
